Playing The Victim

In The Crucible, Abigail Williams can either be viewed as a victim, or as the perpetrator. Abigail is definitely the perpetrator of the story. Because of her, many innocent people are wrongly executed. The people whose lives are taken for no reason are the real victims of trials. If she would had never made so many far-fetched accusations, the accused would be able to walk away with their life, and there would have never been a conflict to begin with. Abigail is in no way the victim.
Some might argue that there are outside forces acting upon Abigail which give reason for her to be pardoned or excused, however she doesn’t seem to have any forces upon her which influence her actions. She knew what she was doing and was in

Someone who purposely accuses innocent people in order to get who or what she wants and doesn’t care who she hurts and whose lives she destroys in the process is not in any way a victim. They are just plain evil. She had no forces upon her influencing her to do this like some might say, she made these decisions entirely on her own. She had a motive which was to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor to have John to herself. When her scheme failed, she had been the reason that so many innocent villagers were locked up and executed. If Abigail had never made any of these claims to begin with, then there would not even be a series of witchcraft trials. She made a colossal mess for no reason and didn't bother trying to clean it up. Abigail is the culprit of this story, and all the innocent people who died, got locked away, and had loved ones suddenly ripped from their lives were the victims of The Crucible. Unfortunately, no one realized that Abigail was the perpetrator until she suddenly left Salem in the midst of all of this and by this time, dozens had already been killed due to her false claims. Only then had the court realized that they had executed people based on the claims of an absolutely insane

Abigail’s dishonesty by saying that she could see spirits of accused witches, jealousy towards Elizabeth because of her love of John Proctor, and her lust of John Proctor caused her to be the most responsible for the events that occurred. Her affair with John Proctor made her want to go through all sorts of crazy things just so she could be with him when he really didn’t even want her like she wanted…

One of the reasons why Abigail is most to blame for the witch trials is because how often Abigail makes false accusations throughout the play. Firstly, Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft right in the beginning when she told the girls that “Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam‘s dead sisters” (Act 1 Scene I). Abigail knew she would be in trouble if anyone found out what the girls were doing in the forest when the townsmen suggested to call Hale, so Abigail automatically…

Abigail very early in the trials already learns that if she wants to rise to power and not be convicted herself, she will need to play on the fear of others. When Abigail is alone with the group of girls she states “Let either of you breathe a word...and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller 19), Abigail is intimidating people. This is getting to her ego, letting her head get too big, and starting to ruin her name in the town. Another way Abigail is affecting herself is by bringing Goody Proctor into the trial based on a whore’s revenge which angers Mr.Proctor and he tells the court about the adulterous encounters with which in a small town such as Salem will get around to everyone very quickly which will bring Abigail’s reputation in the town even lower than it was before.…

It is easy for the other girls who were there that night to follow along because of their fear that they would get in trouble if they owned up to what they did. Abigail was willing to let many harmless people die in order to save herself. She was so worried about being disgraced for casting charms with her friends in the forest that she put the blame on others. Having the story written as a novel would have been very helpful at this point because the only glimpse into Abigail’s point of view is the conversation that she had with John Proctor.…
