Abigail A Static Character In The Crucible

A woman who manipulated a court to believe she was innocent. A woman who accidentally got the man she was in love with was hung. The woman who was the culprit of starting the massive intensity of witchcraft and didn’t care about the deaths she caused was a vital character in The Crucible. Some people considered her a child, an innocent girl who would never tell a lie. Although, the readers as well as Abigail herself knew that despite her age, she was capable of doing outrageous and extreme things which she could get away with. Some may even say she was savvier than most adults. Abigail was a static character in The Crucible because of her problems that affected not only herself but other characters as well, her insane motives, and her dominant selfish and stubborn mentality. To begin with, all of Abigail’s problems seemed to penetrate into many of the people in Salem’s lives- the Proctor’s lives especially. Her love for John didn’t falter even after he went against her in court. She was obsessed with John and no matter what he said or did, she was too selfish to let him go and to stubborn to believe he didn’t love her. “John- I am waitin’ for you every night.” (Miller, 176) However, John didn’t really care if she was waiting for him or not. “Abby. I never give you hope to wait for me.” (Miller, 176) Nothing stopped her, she was blinded by love. Her selfishness for wanting him gets people killed. Ultimately, Abigail’s selfishness and stubbornness got the best of her because she wasn’t able to grow up as a person and continued lying.
