Enacted by Congress in 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) established a 25 cent minimum wage, a 44 hour long work week, which was later revised in 1940 to only 40 hours per week, and prohibited child labor (Fair Labor Standards, n.d.). However, in 1940, Fred Darby of Darby Lumber failed to comply to the regulations of the FLSA and was arrested when shipping lumber out of state because he was working his employees overtime and paying them under the minimum wage requirement. After a hearing in the District Court, it was found that Darby’s violation of the FLSA was unconstitutional because the Commerce Clause only applied to interstate commerce, not local as Darby described his shipment was (United States, n.d.). However, that decision…

Imagine that you are a young seventeen year old who is nervous right before an interview. You make sure your clothes are perfect, you don’t smell bad, you take one last look in the mirror before you head off and you are reminded by your reflection that you do not fit the “American” mold. All though you are fully aware of this you pack up your nerves and head off to the interview. Thoughts may include, don’t talk too much, answer all that questions right, don’t do anything stupid as you head to the interview. You are interviewing at a store that you already like a lot…

Based on my computations, I would say that in today’s minimum wage in California, $9 per hour might be enough for single person without any dependents and living in a less desirable area of town, but not sufficient for a family with two young dependents nor for a family with one full-time or one part-time worker with dependents. There were certain discrepancies between the two portions of the family’s monthly budget, and in order for me to acquire at least the average monthly budget of $3,120 (before taxes), I had to cutback the expenses on the family’s entertainment. On my part I calculation, my monthly income came out $3,230 compared to standard California monthly budget, $3,120, which is just a $110 difference. However, unfavorably, that…

National Junior Honor Society is a great opportunity for me, and is an organization that I really hope to be in. I love doing service not because I am forced to, but I get to be with my friends and is also a way for me to give back to the community. I love helping the needy and have participated in countless activities. For example, I was a part of a group that put together care kits for the homeless, picked up trash at a park, and created blankets for the needy. Being in NJHS will give me a chance to find even more ways to do more service and become a leader.…

Why minimum wage should be raised to 12 an hour I know from personal experience that $7.25 is barely enough for a single adult to get by on in Huntsville Alabama where the cost of living is one of the lowest in the country. I made $7.35 an hour and got about 27 hour a week which was about 198.45 a week after taxes I made about 160, now you times that by four it equal to $640 a month plus my army disability of $133 I had 773. I used this to pay my $380 rent, $60 light bill, $20 internet, $57 phone bill not to mention Netflix Hulu and gym fee which total to 30.98. So the sum of my bill were 547.98-733= 225 left of 56 each week to buy gas and food no to mention if an emergency came up I had to compensate for them.…

Imagine working forty hours per week, every single week of the year, and not making enough money to provide an individual's family with essentials such as food, shelter, and transportation. This is what federal minimum wage workers have to deal with every year. The federal minimum wage is the lowest wage permitted by law. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, more than 1.5 million hourly workers in the United States earn the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour (DeSilver). A full-time worker making the federal minimum wage earns $15,080 per year, an annual income that sits below the federal poverty level of $16,020 for a family of two.…

Fifteen dollars an hour minimum for any paying job sounds like a good idea, right? It’s something everyone can get behind: supporting low income families and letting them make their way to the top, and permitting them to live on more than a $10 wage. Although this idea sounds good and seems like the answer to the poverty crisis in America, it’s neither. Despite multiple states pushing for an increased minimum wage, doing so would have adverse effects on the economy and especially on low-wage earners; therefore, society should not be pushing for a higher federal minimum wage.…

Minimum wage hikes do entail income redistribution, but don't impact income inequality. Low wage workers will get a pay increase, but it is consumers who pay the obvious price to support this transfer, not the rich. Raising the minimum wage nationwide will increase earnings for millions of workers, and boost the bottom lines of businesses across the country. While Republicans in Congress continue to block the President's proposal, a number of state legislatures and governors, mayors and city councils, and business owners have answered the President’s call and raised wages for their residents and employees. Read a report on the progress that's been made so far across the country.…

Intro: The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, which means that depending on where you live, working for an hour will barely buy you a Chipotle burrito (this is without guac). Because of inflation, the minimum wage today is worth a few dollars less than before. Many politicians agree that we should raise minimum wage. Bernie sanders for example said “Nobody who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty, a job should lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it.”…

The American clothing brand, Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) is best known for its trendy and collegiate inspired accessories and casual wear targeted toward teens and young adults. The vision of Michael Jeffries, brought on as CEO in 1992, led A&F to become the uniform of preppy, conventionally attractive teenagers across America (Goldstein, 2014). However, in recent years the brand has suffered and the clothing retailer has lost popularity. Logos and Symbols Logos and symbols are often easily recognized and can be a valuable way to identify products (Keller, 2008, p. 156).
