Abeni's Focus On Being Ethical, Compassionate, And Power

Abeni,
Thank you for your post. You discussed your leadership approach indicating a focus on being “ethical, compassionate, and creative concern for others” (Hester, 2015, para.1). This concern for others is an important element of ones effectiveness of a leader. All to often, I see examples in my own work environment, where results not only take precedence over people, but they come at the expense of people. Northouse (2013) stated, “Because leadership involves influence and leaders often have more power than followers, they have an enormous ethical responsibility for how they affect other people” (p. 448). This is an important lesson for all leaders regarding the nature and power of the influence that they possess, as well as the responsibility

Servant Leadership I was reading from Oswald Chambers as a small part of my devotional hour recently and read the following which just leaped off the page at me. John 13:13 Ye call Me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am The curious thing about Our Lord is that He never insists on our obedience. When we begin to usurp authority and say “You must” and “you shall” it is a sure sign that we are out of touch with the supreme Authority.…

This is my leadership manifesto which will give a full interpretation of my leadership traits and how others see me as a leader. 1. How would your subordinates describe you as a leader? I believe that my subordinates would describe me as a leader who stands by his word and actions. One who is not willing to just be a “yes” man and will challenge something that is not right.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

This article was very interesting to me because I have experienced working in a toxic environment and seen firsthand the destruction it can cause. My previous mentor demonstrated dysfunctional behavior and abuse of power. I have always worked hard to perform at my best and be a great leader, I gained new dedication after my employment in that organization. My goal is to learn as much about healthy and effective leadership and to pass along those positive lessons to the individuals I mentor. I find this quite relevant to my career in the Human Resources field.…

I feel as though I best demonstrate my character, leadership, and service by the way I interact with others. I've gained leadership and character by the clubs I am in at school. Operation Snowball has been a huge reason for the way I am today, I've gained leadership positions as a staff member in Snowball, Social Chair for Tennis, and Vice President of Junior club. These clubs have initiated the leadership role that I display to others around me. In the past three years off high school, I've grown largely as an individual and have transformed from being a timid child to a young adult who's biggest passion is to help other.…

Hi Isela, I enjoyed reading your post and the insight you provided. Respectfully, I do believe all characteristics are equally vital for effective leadership. You revealed one of the challenges in leadership as proper support systems and training issues; I do agree, lack of proper training can often lead to deficiencies in health care delivery, quality, and loss of profits within an organization. The journaled article by Warden and Griffith entitled “Ensuring management excellence in the healthcare system,” examines the importance of management training. Managers must be trained on the values, vision, and processes of the healthcare organization.…

While researching Non violent communication I found a pdf that really helped. It is located here, it gave some examples of statements to use and clearly outlined the four step process. As I have said previously I am not a leader at this time, but I have been and hopefully I will have the opportunity to be so again in the future. However, the SCARF model and the NVC (non-violent communication) principals can be applied to many areas of life. Reflecting on my communication as both a leader and in normal life, I can see that I have not been as empathetic as I should, nor have used either of these models very much.…

During the 2010 AELC Innovation Club, Barbara Etter stressed that “You can be very effective as a leader but highly unethical.” This is due to the fact what is ethical can be perceived differently based on personal “value-system” (Hanson, 2009). Northouse (2015) emphasized that ethics is infused in every action of a leader (p.266). For example, ethical considerations involving dimensions of power, moral obligations, innovation, occupational health and safety, and organizational culture, all can impact how a leader is perceived and received (Etter, 2010).…

I define leadership as the ability to influence others to accomplish commonly agreed upon goals. I have held several leadership roles throughout my academic career, but rarely analyzed my strengths and weaknesses. Through Dr. Courtright’s course “Leadership in Organizations,” I became aware of mistakes I have made while leading and may continue building a quality leadership methodology. In this essay, I will identify my key leadership strengths and weaknesses.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

Before I began this journey of going back to school to get my degree I did not know if I could do what was needed to finish. However, as I have gotten into my coursework and started to learn what it is to be a leader, there have been concepts and terms that I have clung on to. For instance, cultural diversity, conflict resolution, decision making, problems solving, quality, and now servant-leadership. I have been an IT professional for over twenty years, starting off as a pc technician that supported faculty and staff at OU with their computer issues at the College of Engineering. Then moving into a management role, providing direction to my team to continue to give customers excellent support, guidance, and knowledge to the rest of campus.…
