It is expected that sports is aggressive however, the real question is, What is the boundary where an injury is the result of honest play turn into an injury as a result of excessive, intentional use of force subjecting the player to criminal liability? In regards to the case you mentioned between Benson and Abdul-Jabbar, in my opinion Abdul-Jabbar definitely crossed the line for he deliberately assaulted Benson with malicious intent. In our society, it is interesting that many sports celebrities (and most of their fans) appear to feel they are entitled to immunity

Many communities, including the black community to which Peterson belongs, are rooted in the practice of administering harsh physical punishment with children or corporal punishment. As Michael Eric Dyson asserts “Beating children has been a depressingly familiar habit in black families since our arrival in the New World. ” When Adrian Peterson was charged with “reckless or negligent injury to a child” there were mixed opinions coming from the public and sports world(Dyson). Some, like the sports commentator and retired professional basketball player, Charles Barkley, view his acts as an satisfactory cultural tradition in punishment that has been passed down by generations of parents in the southern christian community(Meyers). Peterson 's public battle to be cleared of the charges of abuse and to be allowed reinstatement to the NFL have proved to be a catalyst in the fiery debate over what constitutes child abuse.…

The least convincing between the two arguments was the article written by famous ex-basketball player, Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Although his argument was well stated, it only offered a limited view on the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks by Muslim Radicals. Jabbar spoke out as a Muslim-American and condemned the actions taken by “Muslims” in Paris, France. Jabbar later went into depth about how the American people lived through a similar phase, back when the Ku Klux Klan roamed American soil. He used that information to support his claim that Muslim terrorists are not Muslims, in fact, they are simply people trying to make money and pinning it on the Islamic religion.…

Throughout history African Americans have fought for racial equality through many means; a major one being sports. Through their success in athletics, African Americans have made incremental steps towards achieving this collective goal, but due to their dependence on white-controlled establishments, have been confined to parameters of attainable power and social mobility. It was through successful black athletes like Muhammad Ali that spoke on the behalf of African Americans on injustices that paved the way in breaking those parameters and gain black power. The activism that created change by those black leaders has faded away in today’s black athletes, largely in response to the emulation of the greatest athlete of the 20th century, Michael Jordan. Revered globally as a hero and a “God”, with millions of followers wanting to be like Mike, Jordan’s influence influenced black athletes to be racially and politically neutral and strive toward individual success no matter the cost.…
