Abdominal pain can present as visceral, parietal, or referred. Visceral pain occurs because of the nerves sensation of an organ due to acute stretching of that structure’s wall. The pain is normally described as an ache or a cramp. The pain from solid organs is constant while that of the hollow organs is intermittent ranging from mild ache to severe cramping. Parietal pain, also referred as somatic pain occurs due to irritation of parietal peritoneal wall. The pain is normally described as sharp, or pinpoint. Pain from inflamed appendix is an example of parietal pain that the patient will identify in the MCBurrney’s point- the middle of the right lower quadrant.
