Media Manipulation In The Media

Decent Essays
The media is everywhere. They tell you what to believe, what to think, and you don’t even notice it. The media has become an overwhelming part of today’s society in telling us how we should live our lives. People don’t think twice about how the media is seeping into their minds and making them believe only what they want. News networks give out surveys and polls that are inaccurate because the news wants their viewers to stay tuned and continue to watch their networks. This is also the case with fictional television shows; they are not accurate in depicting real life situations and the networks make you unknowingly believe and think how they want you to feel about the topic. People are no longer forming their own opinion, but just going off …show more content…
Depending on what channel, station, television show, or even a magazine is being read the editors have secret intentions on everything that is said. This is forcing society to become more single minded, think less on their own, and form opinions based on what people are telling the public. In a Forbes article, Holiday writes, “…Media manipulation currently shapes everything… I know this because I am a media manipulator. My job was to use the media to make people do or think things they otherwise would not” (1). This shows how Holiday’s job was to make the public close minded to anything other than what he was supposed to convince the public to believe. Media manipulation happens all the time, even when we are oblivious to it. They want us to believe that abortion is wrong and that anyone who has an abortion lacks moral standards. In today’s society everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but the media says a lot of untrue and discouraging statements on abortion. “An alarming 15.6% of women who undergo abortion on screen end up dead… The deaths occur due to complications, when in reality the risk of death from abortion is less than 0.01%, regardless of how far the pregnancy is” (Conti 1). The media tries to make abortion a much scarier thing than it is. They want us to believe something will most likely go wrong and that the woman will regret having the operation done. The media also infers that most women getting abortions are selfish and only thinking about themselves not the child that they are terminating. Jennifer Conti states that, “More than 40 percent of women who have abortions have incomes that are below the federal poverty level. Having another child will make it much more difficult to feed and care for the kids they already have” (2). In Mrs. Pope’s situation she is just hitting the peak of her career and wasn’t even considering have children prior to her getting pregnant. She had to make the choice of getting an abortion because she knew that she could not handle the stress of a child on top of

Bernie Goldberg, also a Fox News contributor, says in a interview with John Stossel that America is stuck in a contradictory media culture and bias is everywhere in the news. There is also a huge bias on the viewer's part and people are wanting to get their opinions justified. Liberals watch the Liberal networks and Conservatives watch Conservative networks to get their views validated. Before there was not much of a choice of what new broadcasts people could watch, which made it easier for people to stay open minded.…

He firmly establishes his position as the informer that justifies the subsequent tone of authority and almost anger. He then moves almost immediately into a series of pop culture cues, referencing their ability to gain support of a population towards one side. He uses these to connect to his idea the that media is no longer a source of knowledge but instead a rallying force for the government when he says, “What Top Gun, Rambo and Red Dawn did for the ‘80s, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and Peter Jennings set out to for the new millennium” (34). One of the most important details of my event was the impact of society and representation. Like said before, I got criticized for my hair for being natural, I was mindful of this on my journey, because of what I had seen and heard from the media and society. The media's depiction of black women is of false representation and my goal was to show my bravery and confidence, as well as healthy hair. Nothing is wrong or ugly about natural kinky hair, people think this way because of the television, magazines, and advertisements promoting products depicting black women with silky, straight hair. Hair is not healthy when it is straightened or relaxed, it is more like making it stressed instead of relaxed.…

As time progresses, media has been gaining more influence on our daily lives and opinions, but it has been starting to disseminate the facts and information about key topics. Since a lot of people rely on the media for information, it causes them to see an event from only one viewpoint, which causes their opinion to sway. One case of this, involving a current event, is when the media reported Trump’s decision to rescind the DACA, which is a policy that protects certain undocumented immigrants to the United States who entered as minors from deportation. When the news had the responsibility of reporting this, three big networks were biased to the con side and therefore influenced most of the people into thinking the decision was incorrect.…

The image of police officers has gone from “good cop, bad cop” to “bad cop, bad cop.” Due to the actions of some officers, the media’s coverage of said actions, and the coverage of what appears to be the militarization of police, people are quickly attaching negative connotations to the term “police officer.” For example, The Daily Targum, a newspaper run by Rutgers University students comments on the issue of police brutality by saying, “When cops are getting hired based on connections rather than merit, their superiors’ priority is to cover up their tracks rather than carry out thorough backgrounds checks and take necessary action against officers with repetitive offenses. We are only fostering a breeding ground for this type of sanctioned…

When discussing the subject of “framing” it is important to examine both the definition and origin of the term but also application of how framing is used. To begin, framing is, as the name suggests, a way of presenting “stories”, specifically information, that is done so through editing, sifting, collecting, and organizing information. In a media setting this is used to help present, information that the media is presenting. The influence “framing” has in the media can rapidly change the idea of even concept that the “framing” is presenting to its audience. In today’s society it seems as if the media is starting to take control of people’s ability to think for themselves. There have been multiple cases in which many news broadcasting stations have lied to their viewers in order to spread fear and confuse, when in reality nothing serious had happened. In today’s world there seems to be three reasons in which the media is causing harm in today’s growing society. One particular reason in which the media is causing harm is what many people like to call media bias, which is the practice of how many news journalist decide in which stories to cover and how they want to cover it. After knowing how media bias works, it leads to the second reason in which does the media report fairly and how the news lies…
