The media is everywhere. They tell you what to believe, what to think, and you don’t even notice it. The media has become an overwhelming part of today’s society in telling us how we should live our lives. People don’t think twice about how the media is seeping into their minds and making them believe only what they want. News networks give out surveys and polls that are inaccurate because the news wants their viewers to stay tuned and continue to watch their networks. This is also the case with fictional television shows; they are not accurate in depicting real life situations and the networks make you unknowingly believe and think how they want you to feel about the topic. Depending on what channel, station, television show, or even a magazine is being read the editors have secret intentions on everything that is said. This is forcing society to become more single minded, think less on their own, and form opinions based on what people are telling the public. In a Forbes article, Holiday writes, “…Media manipulation currently shapes everything… I know this because I am a media manipulator. My job was to use the media to make people do or think things they otherwise would not” (1). This shows how Holiday’s job was to make the public close minded to anything other than what he was supposed to convince the public to believe. Media manipulation happens all the time, even when we are oblivious to it. Pope had to make a decision to have an abortion preformed. The media has over and over again shamed women who chose to get this operation done. They want us to believe that abortion is wrong and that anyone who has an abortion lacks moral standards. In today’s society everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but the media says a lot of untrue and discouraging statements on abortion. “An alarming 15.6% of women who undergo abortion on screen end up dead… The deaths occur due to complications, when in reality the risk of death from abortion is less than 0.01%, regardless of how far the pregnancy is” (Conti 1). The media tries to make abortion a much scarier thing than it is. They want us to believe something will most likely go wrong and that the woman will regret having the operation done. The media also infers that most women getting abortions are selfish and only thinking about themselves not the child that they are terminating. Jennifer Conti states that, “More than 40 percent of women who have abortions have incomes that are below the federal poverty level. Having another child will make it much more difficult to feed and care for the kids they already have” (2). In Mrs. Pope’s situation she is just hitting the peak of her career and wasn’t even considering have children prior to her getting pregnant. She had to make the choice of getting an abortion because she knew that she could not handle the stress of a child on top of
