Abby Sunderland: Able To Disguise Around The World

Decent Essays
16 year old Abby Sunderland was tempted to beat her brother Zac’s world record of being the youngest person to sail around the world solo. Many people think that her parents were being irresponsible letting Abby attempt at the world record. Abby Sunderland should have been able to sail around the world for many reasons. First, Abby was prepared. Without a doubt, Abby had the best equipment possible, such as wet weather gear, life jackets, portable fire extinguisher, a medical kit. Also Abby had backup like an EPIRB which is an emergency beacon, a life raft, flares, patching materials. And Abby was being monitored by blogging and with her beacon. Secondly, Abby was old and experienced enough. One reason is 16 is the legal age to drive solo. Also is more teenage kids die in car accidents than in boating accidents. According to https://americanboating.org/boating_fatality.asp and https://www.teendriversource.org/stats/support_teens/detail/57 in 2016,out of all teenagers from 16-19, 701 teenagers died in boat related accidents and 2,163 teenagers died in car accidents in the U.S. alone. …show more content…
Abby was experienced because her parents put her in thorough tests which proves that she knows enough about the ocean. Also Abby had been sailing 3 years prior to her journey. And this is why Abby Sunderland should have been allowed to sail solo around the world because she was prepared, old , and experienced

Does hitting 16 make you a great driver? Well I'm saying that if you more experienced than you will be a better driver than a 18 year old who had just got their licence. “Turning 16 does not instantly make someone a safer driver,” says Peter Kissinger they talk about experience being the main key of being a better driver, if they were to start learning how to drive at 14 and were on the roads by 16 they would be better than a 16 year old who just got their licence because they turn 16. ¨The second study examined crash rates in New Jersey, which has a minimum age of 17 for unsupervised driving and is the only state in the country to have a comprehensive GDL program for all new drivers up to age 21.…
