Abba Kovner: A True Hero

The Holocaust was a tragic event that sparked the humanitarian aura in many people across the globe. Ironic, isn’t it? A terrible event bringing out the good in others? It began in Poland where Adolf Hitler, leader of Germany, had invaded the country with his armed force named the “Nazi party”. Adolf Hitler had an evil idea in mind, and invading Poland was just the beginning of it all. Jews were scapegoats to Adolf and the Nazis, meaning they were blamed for many of the problems Germany faced after World War I. Because of this, his goal became to exterminate all people of Jewish blood from all of Europe, as well as others who were mentally or physically disabled, homosexual, Polish, gypsies, or Jehovah’s Witnesses. After the war, 6 million Jews had been killed by the Nazis of Germany. He created a movement that helped more than a thousand lives. Nowadays, I feel as if people can be very selfish. Not very many people care to think about other people’s lives or the dangers they face. Abba Kovner was not selfish at all. I doubt he thought once about himself during the Holocaust. Not only did he help thousands of lives, but he also was brave enough to say a speech in front of a whole ghetto, knowing that he’s probably be punished or even killed, had he been caught trying to convince others to join the rebellion. Abba Kovner is a brave hearted man who deserves to be labelled a hero and overall, I believe he made good choices. If I were in that situation, I don’t think I would have the heart to do anything. I would probably count down the seconds until I died. I am not a brave woman, at least, not as brave as Abba Kovner, but his story motivates me not to think of myself and to think of others.
