According to Aristotle, any tragedy has a tragic hero who possesses a tragic flaw which ultimately causes their own downfall. The concept of a tragic hero can also be applied to real-life individuals. For example, Aaron Josef Hernandez, known for being a famous football player, began his life as a rising star before achieving high-status in the eyes of American society. To begin, Aaron Hernandez was born to Dennis Hernandez and Terri (Valentine) Hernandez on November 6, 1989 (Article 3). Before reaching the elevated status as the “Gladiator” he was known to be a troubled kid with a troubled home life (Article 6). From the outside, the Hernandez family was known as a “sports family”. In Hernandez's teen years he showed signs of being homosexual, which Dennis wanted no part of having a “gay son” and wanted him to hide that part of himself (Article 6). To continue, Aaron Hernandez’s life develops as a Shakespearean tragedy because he possesses the fatal flaw of impulsivity. His hamartia is that he acted hastily, without thinking about the consequences of his actions. Aaron Hernandez’s life didn’t fall apart until his father died, because Hernandez looked up to his father for discipline and stability. After Dennis Hernandez’s death, Aaron turned towards crime, including drug use, while in high school, so he turned to football as an escape from his true self (Article 6). Hernandez left high school early to play for the University of Florida in 2007 instead of the normal family tradition of going to the University of Connecticut (Article 6). Hernandez was drafted to the Patriots at 23 years old with a $41 million contract but due to concerns about his maturity he was a low pick in the draft (Article 5). In one instance, Hernandez is alleged to have beaten up a bar manager who tried to give him his bill, which the manager did not press charges due to celebrity status as a rising football star (Article 6). Later on in the partying almost every night, Hernandez was also accused of killing two men after one of them spilt a drink on him at a Boston nightclub, but acquitted in 2017 due to the lack of evidence. The case largely depended on the testimony of Alexander Bradley, a friend of Hernandez, who said Hernandez shot him in the face to keep him silent about the double homicide. But the nightclubs were not the only place he committed crimes like these, in 2007 Hernandez was linked to a double shooting in Gainesville, Fla., though he did not face charges (Article 6). But the case Hernandez is known for is killing his friend, Lloyd, while there was no motive determined for the murder; prosecutors say it’s a breach of trust between the two men (Article 6).
