Aaron Blaise is an artist and animator who worked for 21 years creating some of the greatest animated films of the 20th century. He began with illustration work, but learned to create animation in the late 80s under Glen Keane, helping him to eventually becoming director of animation in several films at Walt Disney studios. He is not only an animator but a painter, digital artist, and instructor. In his many years of training, he has travelled around the world to observe and paint animals and people. He is one of the best animal animators in studio history thanks to his extensive research, observation and practice. When watching his animated animals, one can feel the weight and completely believable motion.

His incredible knowledge of movement, especially in animals, is evident in every film that he helped to work on. Here’s a quote from an interview in which Blaise described his design process of Raja the Tiger: “I did hundreds of tiger designs, trying to achieve the fluid Hirschfield look that the film’s art direction was trying to achieve. I struggled until one day I saw the hood ornament on a jaguar car. The little sculpture had a lot of qualities I was trying to achieve in my designs. I drew a lot of inspiration from the metal on the hood of a car! My designs were soon approved!” (Blaise). The most interesting part I draw from this is the mention of hundreds of tiger designs. HUNDREDS. This scope of work for one character gives me insight into the incredible work ethic that Blaise has; one at a level that I hope to develop. I am constantly
