Aa Meeting Reaction

AA Reaction Paper First off, I have participated in a group session before, so I had an idea of what a group support session would be like, but this AA meeting exceeded my expectations. I was shocked initially when I found out this was an assignment of ours, then I thought this could be interesting. I didn’t have any concerns or reservations about attending the meeting; I just went into it with a clear and open mind. Honestly, I expected to see a lot of disheveled recovering drunks. I came to the AA meeting alone because I went to the meeting straight from work. Although, I came very early because the website I used to locate the meeting said the meeting started at 7 pm, but the meeting actually wasn’t until 8:30 pm. The location of the AA meeting was a Laurel Presbyterian Church off Sandy Spring Road. The AA meeting was held on the 2nd floor of the church in a classroom. The classroom itself was spacious and had big comfortable chairs in a wide circle. I was without a doubt comfortable, for sure everyone made me feel important. There was 12 people total at the meeting, including the group leader, and myself. Everyone was Caucasian and over the age of 40, for sure. About 75 percent of the group was over 60 years of age. The composition of the group meeting was 10 males and 2 females. I was definitely the young gun in the group that night for sure. The opening speaker made a reference to “hooch’ and I thought oh my, he is showing his age right there. The people in the group interacted very well, they just seemed like buddies reconnecting.
