AVID is Advancement Via Individual Determination. This class has shown me how I can think on a higher level and plan for college, and with-out this class my goal would not be close to what they are now. My first goal is to have a high G.P.A., That is the grade point average number representing the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time. This was something that was not very important to me, until I started taking this class and realized how much it was. My AVID class and I had started talking about it and it really started to grow on me how much this really meant into going to a 4-year college. That leads me into my other goal which is to attend a four year college. To attend a four

Avid Scholarship Essay There's always certain people in life that tell you goals are important. They start asking why people set goals for themselves if they already know it's too hard or impossible to achieve. I always believed the same thing. Our initial and final syllabi represent two snapshots into our class-- how we originally expected our class to be formatted, and how the course ended up arranged. While there are several commonalities between our two syllabi, there are also some differences. Many of the similarities stem from the fact that all of the days/activities we had on our original syllabus (discussion days, guest speaker days, etc.) remained present on our final syllabus; the major change came from a new arrangement of those days. The major impetus that led to a change in the arrangement of classes was scheduling our two guest speakers. When we initially reached out to schedule our guest speakers (Sex Jeopardy and CMHS), we did not realize quite how difficult…

Throughout my life, I have always been told that I must go to college no matter what. At first, I did not really think about it that much, but now that I am a college student, I really had to get my stuff in order and take action while I attended to college. And that is exactly what I did. During the fall semester of 2016, at Pasadena City College, I was able to become a part of the Pathways program, join the Lancers for Life program, and was even able to secure a job position within Ralph’s. However, what I felt most accomplished about would be of all the classes that I have taken.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

This past October, I applied to be a tutor for both The Study and Student Athlete Support Services here at Loyola. As a tutor, I spend about 3-6 hours a week in The Study, located on the 3rd floor of Jenkins Hall, helping fellow students and student-athletes better understand their class material. However, The Study is also used as a workspace, utilized by Loyola students for individual studying, group projects, as well as tutoring sessions. Students that are together in The Study at the same time are part of a gathering, which Goffman defines as “any set of two or more individuals whose members include all and only those who are at the moment in one another’s immediate presence” (Goffman, 18). More specifically, this gathering would be instrumental,…

This class has provided me with a very valuable learning experience. As a psychology major I don’t have the opportunity to take classes in the ALS department very often. At the start of the semester when we discussed what SWAPA was I didn 't think much of it, especially because it involved performing my piece in front of the class which made me nervous. However, listening to my classmates perform their pieces each week was one of my favorite parts about the course. It was great to hear people taking the texts that we were reading and engage with them by relating them to personal things and experiences.…

I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
