Assignment 2—Case study
1) Derek seems to be displaying both conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) because his behaviors (and age) meet criteria for the diagnosis of both. To be diagnosed with conduct disorder at least three core symptoms must be present and must occur repeatedly or in a pattern. Derek has deliberately destroyed others property: he vandalized school property and also attempted to break into a neighbor’s apartment. He has also consistently committed theft via shoplifting and was arrested for it, but confessed to shoplifting many other times before, and he also stole a car. Moreover he is also lies as his father says that Derek cannot be trusted because he of deceit.
Also, I think that Derek meets the criteria for ASPD; to be diagnosed with ASPD one must show symptoms since the age of 15 and show more than three symptoms. Derek is currently 15, but his behaviors have been present from months before, as he was arrested “4 weeks ago for theft,” and “10 months ago for vandalism,” and he admitted to other exploits that he had not been caught for. Derek will most likely not complete high school and drop out because of his poor grades and his many absences. Derek may continue experimenting with other drugs with more adverse effects than marijuana and could potentially end up overdosing since he does not care what happens to him. He may even contract STD’s because of his precocious sexual activity. He will most likely get into more trouble with the law if he continues on this path and eventually he will have to serve a heavy sentence. Upon completing his sentence even if Derek wants to change, it would be extremely difficult for him to secure a job with his history and this might create a perpetual cycle which could land him back in
