Each year, about 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters nationwide, but nearly 3 million do not make it out. The ASPCA has conducted 3 solutions for this issue, including Animal Rescue, Animal Protection, and Animal Placement. They are trying to create a positive change for these animals by stating the cruelty that threatens them. This includes: dog fighting, puppy mills, animal hoarding, farm animal welfare, and horse slaughter. ASPCA is an organization that helps to keep animals away from abuse. It is an inspirational organization that you should consider donating to because it gets pets out of shelters to keep them in homes, increases the protection of animals by law and keeps animals safe and away from abandonment and cruelty. The ASPCA, founded in 1866, was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Today, they work to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide. Henry Bergh, the President of the organization says, ‘The ASPCA’s mission… is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”’ (Bergh ASPCA). As a matter of fact, over the course of a few years the association sterilized 5,334 community cats and 273 pets by the end of 2011. In addition, they have created a program called Return to Owner which allows lost, stray dogs to find their home and return them to their rightful place. Since 2011, they have already placed over 1,000 animals back in their own homes. For dogs and cats the number returned has gone up from 731 in 2007 to 801 in 2011, thats a 10% increase! This association gives hope to animals who have been abandoned or left alone for a new start, with a family that will love and care for them. The non-profitable organization works effectively to get pets out of shelters to keep them in homes. For instance, in 2007, the partners placed 7,081 cats and dogs through adoption, Return to Owner and transfers. – an increase of 855. On the official website, the founder has stated, “ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement investigates cruelty, arrests those accused and rescues animals from some of the most disturbing conditions imaginable.” (Bergh ASPCA). They have provided hospitales, rehab centers, and adoption centers for all the animals they bring in. The ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital and Adoption Center provides medical care and rehabilitation to rescued animals until they can find them their forever homes. The ASPCA Behavior Center cares for abused, rescued, and abandoned animals, and offers them love and care until they are well enough to be brought into the official adoption center. Lastly, the ASPCA Humane Education reaches out to children, teachers and parents across the country. They continue to encourage kindness toward animals and respect for all people and animals.
