ASCCP Website Analysis

A very helpful resource my preceptor utilizes is the ASCCP.org website. ASCCP stands for American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. This website provides guidelines and algorithms to help establish an appropriate treatment plan for patients with abnormal pap smears. These recommendations were developed and approved by a steering committee made of national professional organizations, government agencies, and advocacy organizations. They used literature reviews, evidence based practices, and risk-based assessments to develop the guidelines (American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology [ASCCP], 2013). There is also a mobile application called ASCCP Mobile to make it more convenient for providers to utilize. The mobile application specifies screening and management guidelines for the patient. The mobile application will ask you questions about your patient. Once the patient’s age, HPV status, pregnancy status, and previous cytology results are entered, an algorithm will appear to help guide the next step in treatment (ASCCP, 2013). I believe that the website and the mobile application are very helpful. They help ensure that the patient is following the best course of treatment. …show more content…

Pregnancy is something that must be taken seriously. It is one of the largest responsibilities a woman can take on in her lifetime. It is expected that a mother should assume full responsibility and ensure that the child is healthy and safe until he or she is able to take care of and provide for themselves Furthermore, a lot of research has shown a direct correlation between tobacco smoking during pregnancies and health problems for both the child and the mother. In result that is why many people debate whether or not woman are entitled the freedom of choice in regard to smoking during pregnancy. Philosopher John Locke would most likely not approve of hindering your own health, however he is a firm believer that a person is entitled to make his or her own choices in regards to their body.…

Pap smear is a quick and simple test used to screen women for cervical cancer. Pap smear screening is recommended starting around 21 years of age if you are sexually active and then every 3 years. Routine Pap testing can be stopped in women who have had a total hysterectomy for benign conditions (non cancerous). But if the hysterectomy was done as a treatment for cervical pre-cancer (or cancer) or you had undergone supracervical hysterectomy (hysterectomy without removal of the cervix) then you should continue having your pap smears done.. Women over 65 years of age with previous normal pap smear results in the past can stop cervical cancer screening after consultation with your gynaecologist .…

Alcohol, Cigarette Smoking, and Illicit Drug Use, Among Pregnant Women The controversy over the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drug use in pregnant women is a topic that has been researched and discussed for many years. There are many different opinions out there on these topics and no conclusive evidence as to how much use of these substances is too much or an acceptable amount during pregnancy, which makes it easy to conclude that the only way to truly avoid the risks of these substances to the fetus and the mother would be abstinence. The mission of Healthy People 2020 is to provide scientific based strategies that are developed by the use of measurable goals and objectives to improve health, along with developing a greater understanding and a higher awareness of the factors that facilitate disease and lead to a decline in health.…

I agree Elizabeth; I think these apps and patient portals could play a very significant role in improving the delivery of care. These tools encouraged patients to communicate with their health care provider and participate in their health care treatment decisions and as such could increase healthier behaviors and lifestyles among populations who use these tools. However, I still some concerns involving miscommunication and data security when storing patient’s private medical information. With the fast sharing of health information between providers and patients, these opportunities may mean patients spend less time waiting for x-ray scan result or appointments, but could also mean insufficient clinical information transfer, miscommunication…

The content I decided to use is the five P’s substance abuse screening. It has been shown that this is one of the most used models for prenatal substance abuse. It was used because it asks five specific questions to see if a pregnant woman is abusing any substances. I also included a screening for tobacco to see if any pregnant woman is smoking cigarettes. In the beginning I included what prenatal substance abuse is because it may not be obvious to everyone; especially pregnant women who feel smoking cigarettes will not harm their child.…

I agree that patient portals have potential to improve quality care, but they are still in their infancy and not much research has been conducted yet (Kruse, Bolton, & Frenke, 2015). A key benefit of patient portals is secure messaging between patient and provider. I have not yet tried this feature in my patient portal, although I have accessed lab results and paid my bill. I think patient portals will help in underserved populations, especially if portals can be accessed using a smartphone. Just think, no more taking two or three buses to get to the doctor, certain interactions can be via the patient portal.…

Children Websites: While exploring all three websites, I found the website Shakespeare for Kids on the Great website for Kids website. It struck me at first because while I was doing my field experience, the school librarian had a lesson on Shakespeare with one of the English classes. When the school librarian set up the lesson, the children had to find the answers to certain questions in the reference books she provided. In my opinion, the school librarian and the English teachers should have added this resource to the lesson plan because it would engage the students in learning about Shakespeare. The age level of this resource would be perfect for elementary and middle school students.…

Smoking During Pregnancy She pulls a cigarette out of the slim red and white packaging and sticks the cigarette into her mouth and continues to do this throughout her day and pregnancy. Smoking is not something good for anyone, especially for her. Smoking while pregnant is not the best idea, but she makes her own choices, whether it may be smoking often or not, but one thing she never thought about was her newborn son or daughter-to-be. Smoking during her first pregnancy caused her son to be born premature and causes her to get shots almost every week so she is not at risk of going into premature labor.…

Additionally, CDC recommends women 21 and older to have Pap screenings for abnormal cells that may develop into cancer and the HPV test screens every three years. Even though screening works, in the United States it is estimated that about 10,000 American women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year mainly because they are not getting screened.
