ASAM 230 Reflection

Decent Essays
As a first year I found myself being one of the youngest if not the youngest one in ASAM 230. Although most of the students in ASAM 230 were seniors, this course would be most helpful to students in their second or third year of college. The assignments we are asked to read, write and discuss in class are directed to help students recognize their interests. For example, reading about Community-Based organizations and becoming more knowledgeable on how they are coordinated can be essential to a student who is still trying to decipher what they want to do with their college career. Most importantly the paper, What Matters to Me and Why?, is the epitome of ASAM 230 as we are able to connect our experiences in service learning and are able to apply

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

The student personal service plan should give me a sense of involvement through college; much differently what high school taught me. In high school its good to volunteer to show active participation outside the class; suggested why it’s require to even graduate high school. But volunteering in high school was too vague for me. Don’t get me wrong about volunteering at the food bank in my parish, I like it and it what got me started to exceptionally good things for others who might not be fortunate unlike the rest of us; however, the student personal service plan will help me to specifically focus in community service pertaining to my pathway and career goal. Having this lesson taught is good for me and the rest of my peers to set specific service that best suits them to follow their and my dreams in college and in life…

During the first class of EDAD 524 in this summer, professor Fujimoto held an activities that every students marked their true opinions about their identities by different colors. From the class discussion, I realized that if we were diverse in this cohort, how it could be more diverse in American society. Everyone had their own minds about their identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, class, and religion so that it is critical for both current and future student affair to be aware the knowledge of social justice, and understand how specific historical and cultural conditions have impacts on domination and subordination(Adams, et. al., 2013).…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Service, while it does benefit me, is meant to help those around me. Service is valuable in high school because it teaches me the importance to aid others in every way that I can. Service also provides a happiness that I will carry throughout my life until the day I die. The joy on a child's face at a spring carnival when they finally win a prize, or when they look in the mirror at the creation you painted upon their face benefit my soul. The smiles on the faces of people who wander chilly New Albany streets when they hear your carols ring out around them helps to make me realize the importance of community.…

In addition, I plan to participate in some of the office of student volunteerism projects such as: (ASB) Alternate Spring Break where you take a one week excursion to go address a community service initiative of your choosing or the Comet Cupboard that serves as a food and resource pantry for students in need on campus. These are just a few of the community service initiative I plan to get involved in. Class #1 No readings (yet) Course introduction and overview I am extremely excited about PACS 331 and the content that we are going to cover throughout the term. I’ve always been interested in trauma healing and hope that after the course I will be more knowledgeable about identifying trauma and about how to help those who have experienced or are experiencing it. I personally think that the idea of these journals is a great learning tool. Taking the time to reflect on learning is something that often is tossed aside until dreaded midterms and finals where the lessons are required to be absorbed, usually at a thoughtless and rushed pace.…

The fears that I had regarding SPMT 600 delayed my registering for this class for well over a year and in hindsight, I was so silly in doing so. My academic plan had another course listed as the first course which I was quite excited to take and when I realized it was not going to be available in the near future, with an incredible amount of hesitation, I pressed send and enrolled in this course. I was afraid that this would be heavy in statistics, which gave me a lot of problems in my undergraduate days. I have truly enjoyed this course and a little disappointed in myself for delaying taking this course but, if I put on my SPMT 600 hat and look at what I have learned from Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, now was the right time to be in…

When I first came to college, I was scared to take a college level English class. In high school, I slacked off all of my English classes due to the fact that all teachers taught pointless lessons. In addition, students would get A’s or B’s for the words that are on paper rather than the critical analyzes. Lang 120 is the first English class to step away from my passive writing and challenge myself more on critical analyzes and the stages of writing. In my Lang 120 class with Professor Pisano, I learned how to connect information together, how to actively gather sources, and effectively communicate with an audience.…

I believe that the key to service is being involved. Service has played an essential role in my experience as I have committed myself to numerous clubs, jobs, and activities. I am currently a sales associate at Xavier University’s All for One Shops, an intern on the Cincinnati Parks Levy/ Yes On 22 Campaign, a member of Xavier’s American Sign Language Club, CFJ Companian Groups, and Honors Council, and volunteer, when possible, at the Kentucky YMCA and Xavier’s Community Action Day. It is through my dedication to service in being involved on and off campus, that I exhibit Alpha Sigma Nu’s core value of service as I have faith that I can create positive change to not only the Xavier community but to society as a whole.…

As mentioned in the article posted by UM, faculty benefit personally and professionally from integrating service into their courses by encouraging interactive teaching methods, which add new insight to discussion in the classroom (Benefits of Service-Learning). By doing so, teachers are able to promote students to apply themselves more, and become more active learners. In my service learning, I was able to have that hands-on experience. This helped provide an opportunity for myself to become more creative and become an active learner. In some classes, applying myself to learn was difficult, but through service-learning assignments, I gained new knowledge.…

Because service learning classes offer hands on experience, they allow students to see if a certain career would be a good fit for them. Not only did these classes offer Young hands-on experience, but they also introduced her to a new style of learning. “It made me kind of disappointed going to other classes because I felt like sometimes I would be just memorizing things out of a textbook and that I could be using my education for so many other things,” said Young, “or that I felt like I was learning more in service learning than I was just sitting in a lecture.” Besides the experience, connections made with instructors and other peers help students feel like they are a significant part of a larger community.…
