The myth, the legend, the weapon. The AR-15 is a style of semi-automatic/automatic rifle that is used in civilian and military applications. The first design was actually named the AR-10 and was submitted to replace the M1 Garand but, lack of time and testing before military trials didn’t allow it to be adopted as the new military rifle. In 1956 the time was right for a new smaller caliber rifle and the AR-15 was designed and built by Armalite. Three years later the designs were sold to Colt and the modern AR-15 was born.(1) The AR-15 also has many attachments such as scopes and suppressors.

There are many different designs and uses for scopes. The main types used by hunters and competition shooters such as myself are; open sights, telescopic sights (magnification), red dot,and night vision. The most common and my personal favorite sight is a telescoping sights which is a series of glass cut at different angles that causes a target to be appear closer than it is. It also has a crosshair which is etched into the glass and gives a point of aim. I have this type of sight on all but one of my rifles which shows the major use of telescoping sights. A subcategory of telescoping sights is night vision scopes they take light particles in the air and gather them to outline a target. This is a very fun use of sights and can be very effective for rodent hunting. The third type is open sights which comes standard on most guns. Open sights are two small pieces of metal that when aligned allow a target to be hit. These are not used as common as telescoping sights but are used as a cheaper alternative and is the only legal sight in some states. The final sight is a red dot which uses batteries to project a small colored shape on a piece of glass that is used as an aiming point. The main advantage of red dot sights are faster target acquisition, lighter weight, and smaller size. They are often used when making close shots and I prefer them for raccoon
