ALS Lesson Plan Essay

Lesson Plan for ALS Nurses play a pivotal role in providing education to the patient and family. The nurse has to research and gain the necessary knowledge in order to provide adequate care for the patient. I chose to implement a teaching plan for a family of five. Their father is currently in the hospital on the medical surgical floor and has been recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral scoliosis also known as ALS. After assessing the needs and interest for the patient and family, I discovered that the family will need some education on the different stages of the ALS disease process. T.D. will focus on his fear of the disease process related to dying and not having any control over his motor function. I chose to address the responding level of the affective learning objective. For example: after the teaching instructions, the patient will express fear and concerns over losing control of his motor functions as the disease progresses.
The affective learning objective for the family is to assist them with anticipating the care and needs of their father during the progression of the disease. I chose to address the receiving level of the affective learning objective. For example, during the education session, the family will be able to pay attention to the changes of the patient physical function as the disease progresses through each stage.
The affective learning objective for the staff to ensure they are educated on management of ALS symptoms for the patient. . I chose to address the perception level of the affective learning objective. For example, after fifteen minutes of teaching the staff on maintaining airway patency of an ALS patient, the staff will be able to describe how to perform deep breathing and coughing exercises in order to help with lung
