AJROTC Reflective Essay

When I first heard about AJROTC, I wanted to take no part in it since I visioned myself being yelled at by the instructors and wearing those unappealing, green uniforms. I finally decided to join the program not because I wanted to, but because my friends joined the program as well in order to avoid being in PE. I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into. Seeing cadets being eager to take on leadership roles was something I didn't want to be involved in. It wasn't until I was selected to be a squad leader’s assistant through a game of Tap Out. I was too scared of messing up and being called out for my mistakes so it motivated me to take on this leadership position to the best of my abilities. The longer I stayed in the program, standing at attention, presenting arms, and marching in cadence felt like an everyday routine for me. Learning how to have discipline and executing every movement with precision seemed natural to me. I began to have this determination to become more involved in the program rather than be a simple cadet. Becoming a S-4 Shadow allowed me to become more exposed to all of the responsibilities in taking of the inventory and uniforms. I was motivated to accomplish each task with …show more content…
It has helped me break out into the person that I am because I developed as a leader. I have become more outgoing and social. This program has let me create connections with other cadets and my instructors. It has influenced me to be involved more at school and take on leadership positions in clubs. Getting myself involved in leadership responsibilities helped me escape the struggles of the family issues at home. Being in AJROTC allowed me to discover the type of person I truly am, the one who is willing to help others and is determined to accomplish their goals.
