I went to AHIMA STUDENT OPEN HOUSE on Friday, April 7, afternoon session from1 pm-4 pm. Lynne Thomas Gordon, the Chief Executive Officer started the meeting, she welcomed everyone and gave the speech to Annie Li,Chair Executive Officer, AHIMA who talked about the importance of continuing education and how AHIMA can help and facilitate CE. Also, she talked about how being a volunteer give us the opportunity to get involved with AHIMA. Then I enjoyed listening to Bill Kholer, lecturer in managerial communications, University Illinois at Chicago. He talked about the different types of tempers and how importance to know them because that will make it easy to manage them. He also talked about different types of personalities “Lion, Otter, Golden Retrievers and Phlegmatic”, the strengths and weaknesses of each type. And the most important part when he talked about interviewing tips which are research the company and …show more content…
He also gave us Resume Tips which are, the resume should be one page, no typos, shouldn’t include high school information. The resume should have the quantify accomplishments, not job responsibilities, and the time it takes to read it should be about 20 seconds. His presentation was very interesting and helpful. After the break, Melissa Geldmyer the Certification Program Manager, AHIMA talked about AHIMA certifications. She explained the benefits of certification, testing policies, application process and preparing for RHIT and RHIA. After that, Kristine Geldmyer talked about using AHIMA student membership and its benefits. Then Mary Taylor-Blasi talked to us about Appling for scholarships, what types of scholarships are out there, where can scholarships be found, when should students apply and how we navigate the process. Then we listened to Bonnie Aguda Grants and Sponsored Programs Senior Manager, AHIMA Foundation. She talked about apprenticeship program and its process. We ended the meeting with AHIMA office tour, it was a nice day and I learned a
