Class activity: After Viewing the documentary on Marcus Garvey: Toward Black Nationhood, please complete the following exercise.
1. What did you know about Marcus Garvey before watching the documentary? How did this video change your previous views?
Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica at the year 1887-1940. He became a Black Nationalist movement by applying the economic ideas of Pan-Africanists in other to vast the resources available in urban centers. And after, he arrived in New York in 1916 and a founder of the Negro World Newspaper, which is an international shipping company known as the Black Star Line and the Negro Factories Corporation. However, In 1920s, his Negro improvement Association (UNIA) became one of the largest organization in American history. However, it was accused for mail fraud by the U.S Justice Department in 1923, and he later spent two years in prison before being deported back to Jamaica, and finally died in London. What is the meaning of the colors in the UNIA flag? What do they symbolize?
The UNIA colors in the flag means the "The Kwanzaa Song" and its colors are as follows; red, black, green.
The Red, symbolizes the blood that unifies all the Black African ancestry, that shed for freedom or liberation
The Black, symbolizes the Black people’s existence as a nation, although not considered as a nation state but Means the black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is declared by the existence of the flag.
The Green: Symbolizes the prosperity of the natural wealth of Africa.
