The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) webpage on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an informative page meant to spread awareness about the disorder. The site explains the signs, symptoms, types, causes, treatments, and diagnosis of ADHD, as well as explaining how to manage symptoms, get help, and help adults with ADHD. The webpage also describes the three different types of ADHD and their different effects on victims. Through this website, the CDC effectively spreads awareness about this disorder and helps the American general public to understand how it may affect victims, and how to help them. In crafting this website, the CDC effectively uses the three rhetoric appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, to achieve its purpose of informing about ADHD.
First, the author of this webpage uses the rhetoric appeal pathos to achieve his purpose. The author uses this appeal perhaps the least of the three appeals. Pathos is an appeal to the emotions or passions of the reader (Smith, 2015). Because the page on ADHD is factual and informative, rather than a persuasive essay, pathos is not used very much. Ethos is the author's appeal to authority, credibility, and character (Smith, 2015). Therefore, the audience will either know that they can trust the information they're getting from the author, or that they should not consider the information credible. This document appeals to ethos simply by being on the CDC website and written by the CDC. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is a government department, funded by the government with the purpose of researching, preventing, and informing about disorders.
