First of all, A.1.a. says that my primary responsibility of counselor is to respect the dignity and to promote the welfare of clients. I should do everything for my client Angela best interest. Since I might breach the confidentiality in this case, I am obliged to review with Angela the rights and responsibilities of both of us. “Informed consent” (A.2.a) can be also applied to this case. For the same reason, I need to include “Respect for Confidentiality” (B.1.c.) and “Explanation of Limitations” (B.1.d). (A.4.b.) tells me to avoid harm to my client. “Abandonment Prohibited” (A.11.a.) says I should assist in making appropriate arrangements for the continuation of treatment. First of all, it is very important to talk about principle of nonmaleficence and beneficence. Breaching the confidential about Angela’s situation might help protect Angela from further abuse. It will support principle of nonmaleficence. However, if Angela does not feel confortable about reveal her personal information, it may leads her lose the trust and stop the counseling services. It could against the principle of not doing harm. According to the principle of beneficence, I have an obligation to provide a service that benefits to my client. Angela need to be protect, I should do something to stop the abuse. As her counselor, I need to help her. At the same time, beneficence also indicates that I should take care of Angela’s mental health. For example, if Angela become nervous, upset and disappointed by my protection, it would violate the principle of beneficence. In addition, the revealing of his abusive behaviors might change Angela’s boyfriend’s life. It is possible for him to lose the job. My dual relationship with Angela could also do harm to Angela which will violate these two principles. The principle of respect for autonomy which means independence and self-determination. So I should respect the freedom of my client Angela to choose her own direction make her own choices.
