Laura Schlessinger, a popular American talk radio host, once said “When you’re the victim of the behavior, it’s black and white; when you're the perpetrator, there are a million shades.” Her words ring no more true than when examining a recent standoff between Gordon College and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) concerning the role of religious freedom and the acceptability of harassment targeted at sexual orientation minorities. Gordon College seeks to maintain a religious policy which bars sexually intercourse outside of marriage, and consequently dating among LGBT students. The NEASC, who provides Gordon College it’s accreditation, has demanded the college reverse its policy and move towards more tolerant practices or risk losing accreditation as a higher education institution. Historically, society has continually strived towards equality and, in doing so, our understanding…

As a result, they require safe and comfortable spaces to express themselves without worrying about physical and verbal attacks from those who are terrified by their lack of knowledge of who these people in question identify as. This illustrates what several LGBTQ people face on a daily basis. Therefore, we need to undo this injustice.…

In the essay “When Women Become Men at Wellesley,” Ruth Padawer discusses the debate of having transgender males at an all women’s college. She states how women seek these colleges in order to find empowerment in how women are the leaders on campus and making the decisions. This makes it harder on the students who are transgender men coming into a woman’s space. They often feel like outsiders and asked Wellesley College to change their motto of “sisterhood” to “siblinghood” and to use inclusive pronouns in classes. I chose this essay instead of “What is a Women?”…

In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

I am honored and extremely grateful to you for this amazing opportunity; knowing that I would inevitably be paying for hormones and surgery in my transition, I was afraid to dream of continuing my education. But, your support assures me that there are people who want to see LGBTQ+ folks like myself achieve their goals and dreams. For me college has not only helped me realize that, despite hardship, I do have a future to dream of but also that I can use my experience to help other folks in my community. Being a former high school dropout and continuing to higher education, I have been able to…

One organization in particular, the “Student Homophile League” formed at Cornell University in 1968 laid the groundwork for gay and lesbian independence. Cornell University wasn’t the only university to develop these organizations. Many other universities across the country began to mobilize and join the militant groups of activism for equal rights. It was not easy for students to form organizations such as these despite acceptance from other non-gay groups. Cornell University refused to grant SHL approval until they received a list of all members.…

Since the dawn of man, one fact has remained true to this very day: we are all unique. Upon this earth, the United States of America has always been notorious for its blend of every type of individual imaginable; it is home to nearly 318.9 million people, all of which descend from every crack and crevice of the planet with their own set of traits and characteristics. One unique group in particular has risen like the Phoenix from the ashes of inequality and changed the mindset of society throughout the twentieth and twenty first century, and it continues the fight today; this group is none other than the LGBT community, an assortment of American citizens who identify with a different sexuality or gender than what society has instituted as what…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Transgender refers to a person’s gender identify--a person’s innate sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between( Banks& Banks, 2013). School are starting altering these practices: inviting same-sex couples to prom, providing gender neutral or individual bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender student, and including LGBT people and perspectives in the curriculum (McCollum, 2010). With acceptance, this population still face discrimination and prejudice. In school, LGBT students are harassed and bullied.…

Throughout history the Canadian education system has been utilized as a means to instil societal values and reproduce cultural norms. Researchers have referred to this phenomenon as the hidden curriculum (Jay, 2003). This hidden curriculum serves to secure the privilege of the dominant culture while subsequently marginalizing minority individuals. Normative discourses of gender and sexuality are promoted to students through the process of socialization. The process of constructing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) individuals as deviating from the heterosexual norm is referred to as heteronormativity.…
