ABA Interventions

Science Education Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) interventions (EIBI, PECS, and Video Modeling) may seem to be utilized for improving behavioral, social, and communication skills, but, they can also be used for academic development especially science. For instance, since autistic students are considered to be more visual learners than auditory, then PECS and video modeling can be used for their education (Dettmer, et.al. 2000). However, due to the limited amount of research conducted towards science content, there is hardly any study that did research on science content using these ABA interventions. Nonetheless, it is possible to find experiments in studies that are similar to the ABA interventions. For example, Knight and colleagues (2012) conducted an experiment where they were teaching three elementary students scientific descriptors (wet, off, cold, dry, hot, etc.) by using an intervention they called explicit instructions. Before they started using explicit instructions, the researchers assessed the autistic children’s knowledge of the science descriptors, by displaying four objects with one depicting the concept for example …show more content…
To help autistic students to memorize these words and to comprehend them, Knight and colleagues (2013) used something called graphic organizer and also explicit instructions. Graphic organizers “is “procedural facilitator” which may include visual displays, diagrams or outlines to help students organize fundamental concept and vocabulary (Knight, et.al. 2013, p: 116). In Knight and colleagues’ (2013) experiment, they were able to teach students to understand and comprehend the vocabulary and the big picture of “conviction” by using a graphic organizer (Figure 1), and explicit instructions. Therefore this shows that “Students need to grasp vocabulary to understand “big ideas” in science” (Knight, et.al.

Neuroscience researchers have conducted research on infant brain development, in hopes of detecting neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Autism) and applying early intervention strategies. In definition, Autism is characterized by poor social, communication, and behavioral skill development (Najdowski, 2009). In hopes of finding an appropriate intervention strategy, Reichow (2012) conducted a meta-analysis and found that the use of the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), on children with Autism, has proven to be successful. In addition, therapist and agencies have developed additional programs under the ABA umbrella; one program that is currently under the ABA umbrella is the ABA Skills Intervention Program (SkIP). Evaluating and analyzing the behaviors and developmental trajectories of infants, children, and adolescents, with and without ABA SkIP intervention, is needed to measure the effectiveness of the early intervention of ABA SkIP.…

According to Light and McNaughton (2012), AAC intervention is considered the the last resort as a form of therapy and is typically implemented after years of traditional speech therapy. There have been many changes to AAC since it first became available. The changes to ACC include: the population that uses AAC, the change in the scope of communication needs, the different types of AAC available, and the changes in expectations by individuals who use it. In the past, only a small amount of AAC manufacturers developed, produced, and supported a small amount of AAC speech generating devices. Since then, there has been an explosion of with mobile technologies, including tablets and iPads.…

ABA therapy gives children with autism the ability to learn social skills, behavioral skills, and language. ABA therapy is important for children with autism because of its ability to help with social skills and behaviors, and ABA therapy should continue to have separate educational centers to help every child who needs this type of therapy. Reinforcements are given for correct responses while inappropriate behaviors are corrected, ignored or redirected. The most widely used and accepted approach is Applied Behavior Analysis, which has shown to benefit young children with autism by teaching language, social, motor, and adaptive skills through intensive behavioral interventions. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an intensive, structured teaching program. Lessons to be taught are broken down into their simplest elements. These elements are taught using repeated trials where the child is presented with a stimulus ( like “ do this” or “touch object” or “look at me.”)…

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) regularly have a limitation on areas related to socialization, behaviors, and communication. The majority of the students with the disorder is often referred to as visual learners and can readily show responses to information given visually (Groskreutz et al., 2010). The application of student’s visual enhancement tools as strategies can help in the reduction of overdependence on their areas of limitation such as communication and auditory processing. Consequently, there exist various strategies that educators can apply in the classroom to facilitate and augment instructions. The strategies promote students’ learning ability while reducing dependence on elders’ cues and prompts.…

I knew based on what we have been study and discussing over the last few weekend and by my own personal experience with students with autism, that visuals were important. I never considered the differences between no-context and high-context photographs. When I first looked at the study and purpose of this study, I have a predetermined outcome in my mind before I even read the study. I believed the outcome would determine that the high-contextual photographs would be the most effective way for the students to transition. When I finished reading the study and reviewed the findings of the examiners I learned something.…
