Meg Murry was a typical young girl until Mrs. Whatsit visits and begins to unveil an entirely new universe. Madeleine L’Engle’s novel A Wrinkle in Time is another circular fantasy novel. Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin meet three divine figures that explain to them that they must save their father by tesseracting to another world. The number three is one that appears in many fantasy novels, and the three divine characters represent this in the novel. “But what’s going to happen?” Meg’s voice trembled. “Oh, please, Mrs. Which, tell us what’s going to happen” (L’Engle 88). Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin look to the three divine figures for guidance and assistance. They first land in a land called Uriel, which is inhabited by centaurs, and in fact, the three divine characters are centaurs as well. The characters uncover that a dark force, which they refer to as “The Black Thing”, is covering the universe. This dark force is the first representation of evil in the novel. “Suddenly there was a great burst of light through the Darkness. The light spread out and where it touched the Darkness, the Darkness disappeared” (L’Engle 91). Charles Wallace falls under the influence of the brain, while Meg and Calvin are able to resist. Charles takes the two of them to where Meg’s father is being held captive. They are able to rescue Dr. Murry, and quickly tesser away from “IT”. This then forms the subplot and another conflict for the characters to resolve. While they are able to escape the influence of the brain, Charles Wallace is left behind. They then must figure out a plan for them to get back to Camaztoz where Charles Wallace is and save him. This is similar to how Lucy, Peter and Susan must find a way to rescue Edmund from the White Witch, which is also like Andersen’s The Snow
