In any work analyzing historical events, even when attempting to view the events objectively, the writer is plague by the lenses that time provides. In Manchester’s ‘A World Lit Only by Fire’ he manages to provide some context to the events leading out of the dark ages and into the Renaissance. But he is still confined to a 20th century mindset, and never able to truly know what the people he is writing about were thinking, and how the world they lived in was vastly different from the one we live in today. Manchester took a shake with his kaleidoscope and wrote a book with what he saw.
