A Woman's Wage By Alice Shessler-Harris Summary

Decent Essays
I agree, women are undervalued for their services and are very much so hesitant to negotiate more generous employment conditions. A statistic from a couple years ago said that ONLY 7% of women ask for a raise. Since I’ve read this, I made sure to ask for more always. In ‘A Woman’s Wage: Historical Meanings and Social Consequences’ Alice Kessler-Harris goes over the struggle to achieve equality in the labor market. Alice mentions that compared to the pay increases of men, women’s wages rise at a slower pace. The labor market believes that it’s the individual’s choice that is responsible for their wage. Later in the book she mentions that wages for women are linked to values of family and tasks assigned to them.

Book Critique Barbara Ehrenreich starts her book by discussing how the lower class of America can survive on the minimum wage. She thinks that living as the lower class is unfair and impractical and hopes that one day they will do something one day and strike for higher wages. She finds it difficult when she discovers that the when housing goes up and minimum wage stays the same it is nearly impossible to compete with this income. Especially women who will be “booted into the labor market by welfare reform going to make it on $6 or $7 an hour?” This is where she uses taking the role of the other.…

This proves that some women are capable of performing equal jobs. Women continue to strive for equality in job titles and pay. Women today are paid, on average, only 77 cents for every dollar paid to men. And the gap is even worse for women of color - African American women earn only 64 cents and Latina women…

The inequality between a man and a woman still has a wide gap. Women today only earn about seventy-seven cents of a dollar compared to men. Women are outnumbered to have control over companies and industries than men whose name is ‘John’. Though this inequality has narrowed and working conditions have improved, we cannot disregard how gruesome it was for the factory women and immigrant women back in 1865-1900. Through the journal composed from Mrs. Bessie and Marie Van Vorst’s experiences as factory girls, “The Woman Who Toils,” consisted of the numerous tasks given and the wage they received as payment for the long hours they worked.…

The Declaration of Independence says that “all men are created equal,” but where does this apply to women? Women are considered inferior to the male race; it has always been that way. Not only do they receive fewer opportunities than a man, but even their payroll has been affected because of this. In 1963 John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963. This act requires that both male and female employees must be given equal pay for work or you are breaking the law.…

“The latest data from the United States Census Bureau shows that women only make 79 cents to every dollar a man earns” (“Gender Inequality”). This is an unjustifiable fact that needs serious adjustments. The pay gap does not reflect any other characteristics of a woman other than her gender. Verily, “there remains a pay gap — even after factoring in the kind of work people do, or qualifications such as education and experience” (“Your Right”). There is no logical reason as to why unequal pay persists.…

    1. Why do you suppose public speaking is considered the number one fear most of us possess? How: When we give a public talk we are trying to achieve several goals; (1) influence others, and (2) maintain our sense of self. She claims that statistics given by the Department of Labor are simply median wages that full-time men and women receive. She goes on to state that the information provided by the government does not take into consideration the personal factors each employee goes through to get to the position they occupy, such as the number of hours worked or their years of experience. Lukas continually talks about the choices women make in order to obtain careers that provide them conditions, hours, and an environment that makes their job more comfortable, flexible, and to their own personal liking. Additionally, she explains that men tend to tolerate jobs that are more dangerous and require physical labor or overnight shifts, which in turn cause for higher pay. Furthermore, Lukas makes a point about the Paycheck Fairness Act continuously going through Congress, yet fails to actually make a difference in narrowing the gap simply because strictly enforcing the law would cause too much of a burden for employers if employees file for gender discrimination.…

Women are still paid, “77 cents for every dollar a man makes” (Chu). In a nation where we are all equal, we are still not paid the same as a man no matter how hard we work at the same job. Studies have proven that men are more likely to get a job when compared to women that are either more or equally qualified. Along with that women are still viewed as incompetent to do their jobs because of biases that have plagued them throughout their career. According to the Harvard Business Review, women have to prove themselves again, having to try and find a perfect balance between being feminine and masculine in STEM related jobs, having people think that their careers are over because they had children, women either supporting them or distancing themselves to try and make them go what they’ve been through, and isolation.…

It is unfair women get paid less when they do the exact same jobs as men do. Gender should not affect how much one person should get paid. There is not one country in the world where women and men earn as much as men. Equal pay for equal work, it sounds so simple but it's hard to believe it’s almost 2017 and gender wage gap is still such a major issue.…

Women choose what they do with their education, “while men were more likely to graduate from college in the 1960s and 1970s, since the 1990s, the majority of all undergraduate and graduate degrees have gone to women” (Stevenson). Women have the ability to get equal pay considering they have the education they need to go into the workforce, women aren’t applying themselves and don’t get equal pay as a result. To say women aren’t getting paid equally isn’t fair considering they are capable of choosing high paying jobs and working…

    Gender Pay Gap Myth

Women work in lower-paid sectors than men do. There isn’t a gap in the pay between genders that do the same job, but a gap between the pay of the jobs that each gender gravitate towards. As a matter of fact, 90% of women are employed in the lowest-paid jobs . This is the reason why women earn less, not because they are paid less for the same job, they gravitate towards lower paid work. Common jobs for men are jobs like software developers, construction and computer system operators; women gravitate towards jobs like nurses, primary school teaching and human resources and administration.…

In America, one tends to think both women and men are paid equally, but women are paid less than men even at the exact same job. According to the article, “The Wage Gap 2014” in 2012 as full time workers, men made $854 per week while women only made $691, a gender wage ratio of 80.9 percent. The pay gap is larger than most people realize even with both a man and a woman having a college education. This has been an issue for America since 1868 and still is not resolved today. With women working the same jobs as men, it is only fair that they should be paid the same as the men working with them.…

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is just one of countless individuals with this idea; He believes women should stop asking for a raise and instead wait for “good karma”. Particularly, he states, “It’s not really about asking for a raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will give [women] the right raise” (TIME magazine). In Dr. Claudia Godin, a Harvard professor, research has shown that in the financial services women earn 66 percent of the earnings of their male counterparts. For part time employees, the gender pay gap is -5.5%, that is to say women working part-time are paid more than their male equivalents on average” (“Closing the Gender Pay Gap”). To alleviate this problem further, there has been multiple arguments upon this subject, such as to give flexible work hours for working mothers, fathers/husbands should be more involved in helping at home more, abolish the belief that women do better than school (instead, perhaps, actually aid males to exceed in subjects) etc.; Overall, great arguments with its advantages and disadvantages and it has yet to meet fair solutions to solve the actual issues.…

At the end of the day, not being paid as much as a man for working in the same position is going to ultimately dent and hinder household incomes. With divorce rates being so high and single parent families seem to be always growing in numbers, such households are sadly losing out; there is a risk that those households could find themselves quickly falling into the poverty line, with no way of climbing out of it. This hardly seems fair! One thing I would also like to point out is the risk of going to extremes to hire women for certain positions, but who may not perform as well as males who could be more…
