Is life really about the ‘money’, the ‘cash’, who has the biggest gold chain or who drives the shiniest and fastest car, or who has the most respect? Today, in our generation, happiness is viewed in many different ways depending on someone’s personal perspectives. It is a powerful element in everyone’s lives that determines their attitude, which can lead them to success. A legendary English singer/songwriter John Lennon illustrates the story, “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy”. In the mind of a teenager, being an athlete and going home with a game win or winning prom king or queen could mean the world to someone. Everyone has seen it in the movies or in the “best-selling” books that being the person to have the winning touchdown or receiving that crown makes someone joyful and cheerful. Just think about being a teen in high school stressed out from homework and all the daily drama, but the moment they put on their team jersey they can just feel happy and not worry about anything for a small period of time. It’s not just high school students either; athletes everywhere around the world can experience happiness by their sports they play. In fact an article discussing football player’s jersey numbers said, “You know a superstar athlete has become a legend when his name has become synonymous with his jersey number, and there’s a banner with that number on it hanging in the rafters of every stadium of every team he ever played for” (Esteban 1). Growing up everyone is told to dream because their dreams are always possible if they want it, but sometimes we don’t get what we desire. Olympic hurdler, Lolo Jones, is a prime example of this situation. Regardless of growing up having to live in a church basement and having to steal frozen dinners from grocery stores because her family was so poor, Lolo would strive in every way possible to be successful (“Lolo Jones” 1). This would mean winning over 20 USA Championships and qualifying for the Summer Olympics, but never receiving a gold medal (“Lolo Jones” 1). Furthermore, Lolo has had countless downfalls but she had never let them stop her happiness she had in life. Even though she has not been successful in her sporting events, Lolo just tries harder to finally get what she wants. She still has yet to give up on herself because her success does not represent the happiness she still has. In an interview discussing past records in track and field Lolo Jones explained how she felt about her past failures by saying, “I mean, I have legit stats or whatever but sometimes you kind of forget those especially if you get thrown under the bus so many times in the media” (Espinoza 1).
