A Welcome Speech To The Purpose Of Education In University

All members of the faculty, our new students, good afternoon!

On behalf of the faculty and students from the School of Translation Studies, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all new faces here.

Now please allow me to share with you the expectation from the school faculty for all freshmen.

My first point is about the genuine purpose of education in university.

What’s the definition of uni? Our schoolmaster Mr. 戚万学 had talked about his own understanding of university in this year’s welcoming ceremony speech. He said, the word university is formed by 2 characters in Chinese, the first Chinese character大 reveals spreading thoughts, powerful rationality and wide concern for others, and the second character学 interprets acquiring healthy

Studying in university, you should strive towards the above goals, after you graduate, you take the responsibility of carrying forward what you learnt, keeping courage and conscience in mind and struggling for the good of all people.

You need to hold the spirit of science and reason, help safeguard social conscience and justice. You are supposed to inherit human civilization and cultivate independent thinking. You should also learn to show skepticism and criticism when necessary and have clear individual judgement.

Not only knowledge and professional skills need practice, but also the cultivation and development of values, responsibility and personality requires more attention. You need to develop concerns for our country and all humans, and strive for the greater good of all people.

Our schoolmaster had once talked about the duty of Qufu Normal University, which is to help pass on the human civilization to the next generation and cultivate talents for our nation’s revival. So as university students, you should aim to be the next generation with talents that can uphold that

The feature of the Korean major goes as follows: Most faculty has experience of studying or working abroad. Over 60% teachers have or will have Doctor’s degree soon. We cooperate with some Korean universities on exchange students programs. Over 80 percent of the undergraduates can pass the Topic Level 2 Examination. Each year many students can be admitted to some top universities like Shanghai international Studies University, Fudan Uni, Yan bian Uni for master’s
