Virtual Teamwork

Our team 4 included 4 members and our team could be regarded as a virtual team due to geographical differences. As a virtual team, thus, communication was a challenge. However, as the members had communicated and worked with each other throughout the unit and we all knew each other goal, all members believed that working together on a project would be a wise decision. There were two significant advantages in teamwork, including synergy and information sharing. Synergy helped to develop different creative ideas, leading to a higher quality of work, which it would not have been existed if only one member was working on the project. Throughout the processes, all members were responsible for their roles and fully committed to the project. In my opinion, the project was difficult to handle for a virtual team; however, we had performed productively as a team. Due to us working together, all members were able to express ideas, thoughts and opinions more freely. However, conflict was unavoidable because we all had different interests and objectives, moreover, conflict is not always negative because conflict could assist the team by encouraging the generation of creativity and innovation. In our case, the conflict happened because one of the members did not fulfill her role according to the plan. However, the conflict was settled fairly and professionally during meeting. According to my conflict handling styles, accommodating, it was supportive for maintaining relationships with other members. However, in order to improve myself in the future, one thing I would have done differently would be the adoption of collaborative strategy so I could maintain the right balance in order to manage the team better (Tambe, 1997, …show more content…
In the first few weeks of this unit, lack of face to face communication was the difficulty that that I did not envisage because some members did not show up at the meeting without any contact, which it made me feel isolated and worried about the group process. However, as the group operated, frequent and considerate communication allowed members to operate relatively attached even we were a virtual team. The team had managed to finish the project on time at high quality; though, there had been a moment where I believed we would not be able to finish on time as some members had failed to complete their individual sections before deadline as I had planned. The learning experience of the project in this trimester would affect the way I approach other projects in the future, in that I will prepare the planning stage more efficiently and effectively before starting to work on the project because planning provides direction, control and new idea while it reduces
