Research Paper The English idiom "don 't judge a book by its cover" is a metaphorical phrase which means "you shouldn 't prejudge the worth or value of something, by its outward appearance alone". This is something that we all have to deal with at one point in our lives. From judging others to being judge we’ve all experienced it, treating others differently/wrong just because they look different or came from a different background. The two stories that come to mind “Brownie’s” a story which deals with racism and pre judging, while the story of “A very old man with wings” deals with misunderstanding and treating others different just because they don’t look like you . “Brownies" is a story by ZZ Packer, a young African American Author.

Pelayo gets his wife, and they try to communicate with him unsuccessfully. Their neighbor tells them the old man is an angel and it’s here for their sick child. They put the angel in a chicken coop, and during the middle of the night their child 's goes away. They came out to the chicken coop to let him free, but when they get there they see that the whole entire community is there to see the angle. In the story “Brownie’s” one of the African American troops make up a false statement saying that one of the white troops called them by a racial slur which causes this big deal. Both sides end up being mean and doing rude, nasty things to each other because they disliked each other, and then the story takes you for a twist when you find out the white girls were slow learners and that some of them suffer from disorders such as Echolalia. Due to human prejudices, suffering isn’t limited to just racism, but also to human ignorance. This is what the story tries to show us, how racism is not just one sided and how all of us have judged someone because of who they are or how they look. That doesn’t make it okay, that’s something we still deal with today. These same issues are brought up in “The old man with enormous wings” even though the man cured their child of sickness they treated the angle badly and even used him to get rich. Pelayo and Elisenda keep him in a chicken coop outside, where people who come to see the old man with wings pelt him with stones, gawk at him, and even burn him with a branding iron.
