Nancy Wake was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Her family decided that they would move to Sydney, Australia when she was two. Afterwards, her father (Charles Augustus Wake) abandoned their family and at sixteen she rebelled and ran away. Nancy after her studies in Sydney then travelled to Europe where she worked as a journalist. The servicewoman Nancy Wake, during the Second World War became known as the “White Mouse”. This was a nickname given by the Gestapo for her exclusiveness. She then joined the Special Operation Executive (SOE), which was eager to recruit French-speaking women to serve as couriers. She received serval medals after the war and worked for the intelligence department at the British Air Ministry before coming back to Australia
