Total Quality Management – Exxon-Mobile
Total quality management (TQM) encourages and fosters longstanding success with customer gratification as first priority. Customers are constantly changing preference and needs. Exxon-Mobil is known to be revolutionary and receptive, yet they offer excellent petroleum products and services with comparable prices to boot (Exxon-Mobil, 2017). This type of quality the workforce drives home provides a competitive advantage that customers take notice of (Exxon-Mobil, 2017). Continuing to build on this already competitive advantage, Exxon-Mobile takes great stride in hiring and retaining the most qualified individuals available in order to maximize the company’s success with employee training and development (Exxon-Mobil, 2017). In the case of Exxon-Mobil, there was an incident that caused the great company to make a change. (Oil and Chemical Spills, 2017). On 24 March 1989, an oil spill occurred involving the Exxon Valdez oil tanker, in which is grounded itself on Bligh Reef within Alaska’s Prince William Sound (Oil and Chemical Spills, 2017). The collision ruptured the tanker’s hull and spilled out almost 11 million gallons of crude oil into a frontier-like, scenic, and a very well-known to science, body of water (Oil and Chemical Spills, 2017). This spill was one of the most massive oil spills in history. Prior to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010, it was the largest single oil spill in the coastal waters of the U.S. The oil spread so fast through a wide area in Prince William Sound and further, which resulted in a formerly unparalleled response and oil cleanup effort (Oil and Chemical Spills, 2017).
