A True Democracy In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies

John Adams, the second President of the United States once said, “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide”. In this quote, Adams explicitly acknowledges that democracies always eventually collapse. Adams included the words ‘murders’ and ‘suicide’ in his diction to imply that once a democracy collapses, it turns into extreme chaos. William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, shared a similar opinion with Adams. Lord of the Flies is about a group of English boys who are stranded on a deserted island. On this island, the boys attempt to create a fair and just society, but fail to do so, plunging the boys into chaos until their rescue at …show more content…
One of the main ideals of a true democracy is equality, and without equality in a society, having a true democracy is not possible. At the beginning of Lord of the Flies, when the boys are having their first assembly, Jack quickly emerges as a leader of the boys alongside Ralph, the chief, while Piggy quickly plummets to the bottom of society. Jack tells Piggy, “You’re talking too much. [...] Shut up, Fatty” (Golding 21). This quote is significant because Jack is suppressing Piggy’s freedom of speech in their democratic society. Since Jack represents the people with political power, and Golding believes that humans are naturally evil, Golding is showing that even in newly-founded democratic societies, the evil nature of people eliminates equality amongst citizens. Also, the fact that Piggy represents the bottom of social hierarchy clearly means that the boys have not set up a society where everyone is equal, which is another disregard of equality due to humans being evil by nature. Jean Jacques Rousseau, a French philosopher, wouldn’t even consider the boys’ original society a democracy. Jean Jacques Rousseau is the author of The Social Contract, a book which explains how to create an ideal society in order to address the social and political issues of his time. According to Rousseau in his work, The Social Contract, a direct democracy is the best form of government. Rousseau’s vision of a democracy is the closest to a true democracy because all men are equal and social hierarchy is expunged. It is clear that Golding and Rousseau would disagree about government and human nature, but by applying Rousseau’s ‘standards’ of democracy to the boys’ society, one would believe that their society is in fact an oligarchy, rather than a democracy due to the lack of equality amongst the boys. Although, if the boys actually followed the laws they set and had some checks

A great example of one’s ideas on human nature is William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. Through the character Jack, that Golding creates, readers can understand that it is human nature to have an urge for something, which is Jack’s case is a hunger for superior power. In writing Lord of the Flies, author William Golding builds a dystopian microcosm entirely separated from the real world. Through his construction of the island dystopia, Golding provides insight into his perspective on human nature and the degree of humanity, or lack thereof, inherently possessed by man. Among the aspects of society criticized in the novel, democratic government and man’s right to such a system is one of the most prominent. Golding mirrors the actual creation and implementation of a democratic government in his island microcosm. Although the boys’ election, rule-making, and division of labor roughly mirror that of the outside world from which they are isolated—notably a society also in collapse—the children do not successfully…

In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbolism to show that power and leadership can either benefit a civilization or destroy them. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-” (page 16) Having the conch is benefiting them by being able to bring them all together to start a civilization. “Piggy was was dead, and the conch smashed to powder.”(page 186) When the conch got destroyed it was showing how their group was ruined along with it. The conch is used as symbolism to show power and leadership by calling group meetings to benefit a civilization, and once that was destroyed so was the civilization.…

Societies are destroyed with poor leadership. For instance, towards the middle of the Lord of the Flies, Jack decided to break away from Ralph, who made positive changes for the boys, and therefore deciding to create his own new group that was isolated from Ralph’s. For example, Jack states, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come.” (pg. 118) In this scene of the book, Jack is directing his statement towards everyone except Jack, which his opinion was about. It illustrates the beginning of Jack’s group. He ends up gathering more and more boys, teaching them violent and vulgar actions to kill. This illustrated poor and negative leadership, because Jack began influencing the boys to kill…

While the English school boys, on the island, evolved into demonic beasts without a strong parental-esque influence supporting them, modern U.S. high school students are not much different. Many adolescents let unachievable standards set by the media and their own peers dictate their social lives, and as a result, many teenagers, depressed, resort to unhealthy methods of dealing with stress if they are not able to reach the set standards. A hope for solvency, parents possess the ability to stop these cycles of conformity; as University of New Hampshire’s Amber Carlson puts it, “parental support is the largest influence on creating preferable behavior in adolescents” (Carlson, 42). In a speech to the Brookfield East student body regarding the…

In Lord of the Flies, William Golding proclaims that “society” is a made up concept that exists only to create a feeling of security. When the boys first come together, they turn to the idea of order in an attempt to find comfort, endeavouring to recreate civilization by electing a leader and putting rules into place. However, the comfort of directives are soon over ridden by the savage instincts of the boys as they begin to find joy in hunting, killing and inflicting pain. At the conclusion of the novel, the boys come to the realisation that having laws and someone in charge does not automatically make peace and kindness, as they first thought, ultimately revealing that the usual perception of a law bound nation is simply a delusion.…

Every country has a different type of government. Government is a united nation that takes control of the community to be well mannered. Many philosophers came up with different ideas for a strong government because they believed that society would be more systematic with the aid of it. A functional government helps the community to be more developed and guides people to have an equal voice. The government in the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding has no systematic government. Golding wrote a book about few British boys that gets crash landed in the deserted Island. The vile and wicked nature of human beings is captured in William Golding’s Lord of The Flies; the characters mysteriously symbolize a plethora of human society’s known defects, but also manage to resemble its “positives.” The characters develop along with the plot, turning from what seemed to be a formed enlightened democracy, to a tribal uprising - this in turn shows that any government created can only be expected to uphold the standards of its members. If the quality of a society and its rules can only be dictated by its members, then how is this resembled with a few younger boys and their microcosm on a stranded island?…
