“The truly tragic kind of suffering is the kind produced and defiantly insisted upon the hero himself so that, instead of making himself better, it makes him worse and when he dies he is not reconciled to the law but defiant…” - W. H. Auden. According to Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher, some examples of being a tragic hero can be defined as having a weakness, usually seen in pride, having to be faced with very serious decisions throughout the story, and the hero must have discovered his fate from his own actions and not by the things happening to him. “He discerned fright in that tumult. He heard voices asking: ‘Why did he do it?’”(Achebe 205). After the killing that Okonkwo had actioned many were feared and confused about why he had done it. This leads to confirmation of knowing how people had already felt about his actions and that they had not agreed to it at all. “‘That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drove him to kill himself; and now he will be buried like a dog’’’(Achebe 208). This concludes how Okonkwo knew that others would come for him later in time so took action in his death. Also summarizing the fact that he had killed himself to get away from rather getting himself killed by others. Conclusively presenting evidence to how he found out about his fate for the actions he had done.
To summarize, Okonkwo can be perceived as a tragic hero by others because of the accomplished traits given by Aristotle. Such as having a weakness in the hero's pride, having to encounter various difficulties and finding out about his fate which Okonkwo had significantly shown through the story Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.
