A-Tisket: A Short Story

Ever heard of the nursery rhyme, 'A-Tisket a -Tasket'? I haven't. Not until I met him.

Tisket was the name he always introduced himself as. At the time, when anyone asked why 'Tisket', he would give you this look of amusement or boredom and tell you to simply, "Look it up." It made no sense, but then again neither did he. Of course, we could have looked up his picture in one of his old school yearbooks, or simply asked his parents but the mystery was fun. I mean, not many people used a nursery rhyme as a nickname. Not around these parts. Though, the bigger question would be why he hid his actual name? Ever deny anything but Tisket as his actual name? He used to give this annoyed look when asked,- eyes narrowed slightly, and his lips turned

There is something to be known about Tisket. If anyone asked to describe the boy, the first thing I would say is that the boy was smart. Incredibly stupid, but smart. No matter how contradictory that statement is, it fits best. The second thing I would say would be to stay far away from him. He worked to overcome that human limitation of sleep. Don't get me wrong, if you ask him now he probably loves sleep. The two boys from then and now are more different than one would know. At that time though, he despise sleeping. Willing to do anything to not fall into the sandman's clutches. Coffee, energy drinks, medicine, and anything else he could talk his parents into getting him for the sake of a 'good grade'. Sadly, all his efforts were futile, and that next big test was coming up. You all know their's always that one kid in the school. That one who always is high off his rocker and such. Has the connections to majority of things one can ask for, or knows almost anything in the school. If not, you are lucky or oblivious. Hanging in with the correct crowd and simply didn't notice them. Tisket had ran with the correct crowd though, yet they had heard of his dilemma and decided to be courteous. They approached, and offered. Some sweet words of what he wanted to hear, and it was hook, line, sinker, Tisket took the bait. He knew he shouldn't have, but he

The orientation of the poem occurs between stanzas one and three and these introduction stanzas are used to describe the highwayman, his situation with Bess and the setting of the poem. The first stanza is an informing introductory paragraph for the poem because of its spooky, mysterious tone. In the first stanza, there are frequent metaphors used to describe the setting, for example; ‘The road was a ribbon of moonlight, looping the purple moor’ (line 3). The whole of the first three stanzas are used to introduce the poem and give a detailed description of the location, which helps to foreshadow a moody tone further in the novel. Alfred Noyes continuously repeats ‘The ___ was a ___’ in lines 1,2 and 3 to clearly express the meter intended.…
