In Khaled Hosseini’s bestselling novel, the main character, Mariam, grows and develops continually. Over the course of the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam grows from being a shy, obedient young girl to a strong-willed woman when she has several miscarriages, Laila gets married, and Laila and Mariam attempt to run away together.
Mariam learns how to stand up for herself through her traumatic experiences like her miscarriages. She continually grows angry at Rasheed: “Mariam was besieged with anger. It was Rasheed's fault for the premature celebration. For his foolhardy faith that she was carrying a boy” (Hosseini 93). She finally stopped trying to constantly please Rasheed and be obedient to him all the time. Mariam begins to defend herself, indicating that she is growing stronger. She suddenly begins to believe that her life is not okay anymore: “The life Mariam tolerated for so long suddenly seemed intolerable” (Hosseini 256). She begins to take action by running away so that their family may get a better life. Running away is a huge risk in Afghanistan at this time, however, Mariam feels powerful enough to do it. Lalia describes, “She felt as though everyone in this place knew, that they were looking on with disapproval at what she and Mariam were doing” (Hosseini 259). Mariam understands that what she is doing is dangerous and wrong, but she has gained enough willpower to do it anyways so she can improve her current life. Her continual strength helps her continue to live and grow throughout the novel. Overall, over the course of the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam grows stronger. She is finally able to stand up and defend herself when needed and grows out of her shy self. Mariam begins to speak her opinion in order to keep herself safe and
