Statement of intent: I am going to write about how in the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” the theme of women’s education is relating to modern day society. I will use examples from the novel and explain how they relate to both Afghanistan and New Zealand in modern day times.
“A Thousand Splendid Suns” written by Khaled Hosseini portrays the reality of a woman getting a proper education in Afghanistan to be challenging. She didn’t know why she couldn’t stay pregnant because she had not been educated on the fact that being beaten by Rasheed was not healthy nor safe for the unborn children inside her.
The second part of the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is told by another woman, age fifteen when she was taken into Mairam and Rasheeds home after her own house and family were in a bomb planted by the Taliban.
Laila’ father Babi believed that an education was key to having a good future, as he told her that “..This country has no chance of success if it’s women are uneducated… Listen closely my dear, Laila, a marriage can wait, an education can not.” By Laila having a loving and kind father that strongly believed in her to get a strong education, she was able to stick up for herself in the future. For example when Rasheed was trying to put Laila's’ daughter Aziza onto the streets of Kabul to beg for money, but Laila stood up for her, and her daughter and told Rashed “I would rather die than let her beg for money!” this showed that with a strong mind Laila was able to stand up to Rasheed. This strong willed relationship can relate to the wider society as mothers would do anything to Keep their children safe, it is a mother’s instinct to care and protect their children however they
