Good And Evil In A Tale Of Two Cities

Throughout life people compare love to hate, Light to darkness, pessimistic to optimistic, strong to weak, and good to evil. But no one can answer the question of which one is the better side, for example, does the good in people win over the bad in people or is it the other way around? There have been many novels that tells us the tru natures of good and evil. For example in “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens, has an unique example of a naturally good person called Lucie Manette. Lucie Manette is the best example of a good person because she was born with a good heart and constantly shows her love for others. But there were also some example of people like Carton who were originally not good nor bad, but became a better person because …show more content…
Also the Citizens could be seen as evil because they hold daily executions as their amusement and they enjoy when someone dies. But Madame Defarge shows her evil though her revenge for Doctor Manette and the Aristocrats. She wants to kill all Aristocrats because of the corrupt government they live in which will cause the French Revolution. Most people hope for this but Madame Defarge wants a certain Aristocrat to die more than everyone else; Charles Darnay. Darnay was an Aristocrat who married Doctor Manette 's daughter, Lucie Manette. Also in the “The Substance of the Shadow” chapter of book the third, it tells us the story of why Madame Defarge hates Doctor Manette and what happened to her sister and her sister 's husband.“He stood for an instant with the finger yet raised, and as it dropped, he dropped with it, and I laid him down dead” (254). Madame Defarge hates Doctor Manette because he failed to save her sister and her sisters husband from dying after being forced to save her. This scene was when Doctor Manette was with the boy as he was dying and failed to save him. This caused Madame Defarge to start to hate and despise Doctor Manette with hate and revenge. Overall the evil from “A Tale of Two Cities” originates from the French Revolution and Madame Defarge 's hate for Doctor …show more content…
The biggest reason is that Carton foils Madame Defarge 's evil plan of executing Charles Darnay because Cartons tricks the court. His plan was to take Darnay 's place at the execution so everyone would think that Darnay was dead, not Carton. He could do this because Carton and Darnay looked alike. The only reason why Carton saved Darnay was because of his pledge to Lucie he made after she revived him and because of his love for Lucie. Another example of good winning over evil was when Miss Pross fought Madame Defarge to stop her from finding Lucie. Madame Defarge wanted to find Lucie so she could arrest her because she was reported to have been giving signals to Darnay while he was still in jail. But even though Miss Pross spoke a different language than Madame Defarge, she knew what was happening and fought with her. In the “The Knitting Done” chapter of book the third, Miss Pross won the fight with love by killing Madame Defarge “It was in vain for Madame Defarge to struggle and to strike; Miss Pross, with the vigorous tenacity of love, always so much stronger than hate, clasped her tight, and even lifted her from the floor in the struggle that they had” (286). This shows that the love of Miss Pross was stronger than Madame Defarge 's hate and by the end Miss Pross shot Madame Defarge with her own gun. The last example of good winning over evil, was through the

Charles Dickens portrays Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, and Charles Darney as morally ambiguous characters. Dickens’ background as a muckraker dissected into it to reveal the hidden story boiling underneath human nature. Muckrakers are incredibly objective, as was Dickens’ writing style. His past experiences gave him an insight of morally ambiguous characters to use in his novel. Madame Defarge can clearly be described as hasty, vengeful, whatever nasty adjective seen fit.…

Unless one examines her character critically, it would seem glaringly obvious that Madame Defarge is an insane, violent, and cold revolutionary whose insatiable bloodlust is matched only by her hatred of the aristocracy; the novel is replete with evidence to support this claim: “I care nothing for this Doctor, I. He may wear his head or lose it, for any interest I have in him; it is all one to me. But, the Evrémonde people are to be exterminated, and the wife and child must follow the husband and…

Readers tend to be quick to judge characters without first considering all the relevant information. In Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Madame Defarge is often thought of as a ruthless villain who is willing to use any means to satisfy her desire for vengeance. However, her willingness to combat injustice around her with force does not justify her classification as a villain. In actuality, Madame Defarge, while she is by no means a perfect person, has good reasons for her actions and fights for a noble cause, but her circumstances necessitate that she use unappealing methods.…

Justice is something that people use to get revenge when they have been wronged, and should be used in order to fairly punish an unacceptable action instead of getting back at someone with the same action. In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, characters seek revenge by inflicting the same pain upon the person who has done them wrong. By doing this, Dickens shows his audience the actions of the French are similar to the conflict that was happening in England at the time. Also during the time of Charles Dickens was the transition from Romanticism into the Victorian era. Because his writing was affected by both, this novel has a surfeit of Biblical references and realism, along with dramatic scenes used to emphasize Lucie’s perfection,…
