A table from Lane-Petter and Howell (Table A: “The Principles of Humane Testing” 1) shows that in the countries labeled; India, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and United Kingdom; the majority of the animals used for testing were mice in all cases. The runner up for these countries is rats, with the exception of chickens in the United Kingdom. Lane-Petter and Howell also calculated that 98 percent of the animals tested in Switzerland are mammals. Italy is next in line with a 95.7 percent mammal use (1). In a study from 1952 to 1956 a table was presented showing the percent increase or decrease in the types of animals used for testing. There are many reasons as to why animal testing should be discontinued. Many common practices within this area of study include forced inhalation, force-feeding, prolonged periods of physical restraint, and food and water deprivation. The safety for these animals is often unconsidered. Some of the testing done requires the applicant or digestion of harmful chemicals that can severely injure or possibly kill the animal. An anonymous person stated that 70 percent of animals went without anesthetic. The cost of animals testing is also very high compared to other alternatives, which can be thousands of dollars cheaper than animal testing. These include in vitro models and microfluidic chips.
