A Swot Analysis Of A Nursing Action Plan

Great Essays
This assignment is conducted of an action plan to help evaluate two key areas which have been identified during a completion of a SWOT analysis. My first key area to develop is confidence. Weaknesses have been acknowledged during my first year of nursing which include being an introverted person and being hesitant to attempt a new clinical skill. Opportunities have been recognised to help overcome my lack of confidence which consist of directing myself to the clinical skills website, and also embracing every opportunity that is presented to me within placement. My second key area of development is pharmacology, as my main area of improvement is understanding the different medications used and how they work. To help myself achieve learning pharmacology, …show more content…
This can impair my chances of gaining confidence as I do not feel comfortable placing myself in situations which result in feeling uncomfortable. Shives (2008) backs this up by saying an introverted person is not a natural leader, and experiences difficulty when placed in unknown situations. In addition Smyth (2008) says the lack of confidence can affect a student’s communication and interpersonal skills. In contrast with not feeling confident, my mentor commented that I am particularly good at looking and acting confident when communicating and caring for patients, even if I do not feel confident. For instance Belsi (2016) says being self-confident is incredibly important when interacting with patients, as it provides a respectable first impression creating a foundation to help build a relationship between them both. So even though I can feel very uncomfortable, I am perceived by others to appear confident which enables me to interact with patients. However, my confidence continues to be a key area of development as it is incredibly important to be able to communicate confidently, as this is a progression point of the NMC and is also stated in the NMC code (NMC, 2008). Nevertheless, there are opportunities allowing me to improve my confidence within practice to help achieve my competency …show more content…
If I follow my action plan to use clinical skills, complete reflections and take opportunities that are presented to me, I will achieve my goal of increasing my confidence. As for the NMC stating nurses must safely practice pharmacological interventions, this was another area to develop. By completing my action plan thoroughly including completing a placement with a hospital pharmacist, referring to the BNF and asking my mentor to assess me then I will expand my pharmacology knowledge. By completing my action plan I will have developed on my competency domains for year one, including communication and interpersonal skills and nursing practice and decision making. Achieving these goals I have set for myself will also allow the achievement of the progression point two upon completion of year

NMBA standard #3 states that we should maintain the capability of practice by using a lifelong learning approach, actively engagement with the profession and by identifying the integral role of nursing practice and profession in influencing better health outcomes for people. In this situation, I gained trust of supervising RN by demonstrating my capability in patient care in…
