We will explore how Mary as mother brings us closer to her Son. She brings the good news of the Incarnation to her kinswoman Elizabeth, and through Mary being mother of the word incarnate in her womb, and through her salutation filled Elizabeth with the Holy Spirit and enabled her to recognize the presence of God in her midst. Mary in the Scripture is present at the most important moments of Jesus’ life and ministry. She was present at the beginning of his ministry at the wedding feast at Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle, and giving her to the beloved disciple, he goes ahead and declares “it is finished”. Love for Mary helps to shape the early church, devotion to Mary helped to bring the medieval church and authors like Louis DeMonfort to a more perfect devotion to the redeemer. Mary as mother, evangelized the masses in America in 1531 at her apparition at Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. The shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, shines forth as a monument to the one who is the “mother of the true God, giver of Life”, John Paul in his first visit to Mexico and the Shrine exhorted “They bring me to you, Mary, in this shrine of the people of Mexico and of the whole of Latin America, the shrine in which for so many centuries your motherhood has been manifested.” Lumen Gentium says “The maternal duty of Mary toward men in no wise obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows His power.
