James’ treatment plan will incorporate the ACT approach in the management of his SAD. ACT posits psychological suffering is caused by experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion, this results in failure to behave inline with core values (CITE). ACT unlike traditional CBT therapies does not focus on symptom reduction; it focuses on facilitating psychological flexibility, this is awareness of our core values and internal experience but acting on our long term values rather than giving into our short term feelings and impulses (CITE). ACT uses 6 principles to develop psychological flexibility these include cognitive defusion, acceptance, contact with the present, observing the self, identifying core values and committed action (CITE).
