A Summary Of Cuckoo's Nest

Decent Essays
Cuckoos are notorious cheats. Instead of building a nest, incubating their eggs and raising their chicks, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave the task of raising their offspring to the unsuspecting host. Their eggs are usually the first to hatch in a nest. Then, before it even opens its eyes, the newly hatched cuckoo chick heaves its unrelated siblings out of the nest, leaving it to monopolies the attention of its foster parents.

Cuckoo Search is characterized by three laws:
1. Each cuckoo lays one egg at a time and disposes the egg at a randomly chosen host nest.
2. Secondly, the best nest with excellent quality of eggs will carry over to the next generation, and
3. Lastly, the number of host nest is fixed and the

The weak, powerless, and vulnerable are all types of people society creates through the act of self destruction. The idea of society causing a person’s own self destruction is contradictory, however it is a main theme in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In the novel, patients are admitted to a psychiatric ward when they stray away from following social norms, not because they are sick. The ward is run by Nurse Ratched, a controlling woman who is ironically all about manipulation instead of rehabilitation.…

Review Work According to Kollinker and Richner’s article, Naviagation in a cup: chick positioning in a great tit, Parus major, nests, “the angle between male and female feeding position varies across nests between 0 degrees and 180 degrees and the individual feeding location of each parent appears to be stable over the nestling period”. This situation creates a source of contention between siblings over food. If a parent provides food from the same position in the nest, there is only one advantageous feeding site for the siblings to compete for but if both parents feed at different positions in the nest, then there are two ideal sites, which cuts the offspring profitability in half. If both parents chose to sit in two locations relatively…

New Take on Tropical Songbirds’ Alternative Lifestyles A breakthrough study published on Friday in the journal Science uses life history theory to explain why tropical songbirds typically raise fewer chicks than temperate songbirds. What’s life history theory? Life history theory seeks to explain the ways in which natural selection works to determine a given organism’s anatomy and behaviors. Life history theory suggests that reproductive tendencies, or “life history strategies,” are part of a complex system of species traits, or “life history characteristics.”…

Investigating the Effects of Environmental Differences in Nest Ectoparasite Abundance on Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) Reproductive Success Materials and Methods Mountain bluebirds, (Sialia currucoides) are sexually dimorphic insectivorous songbirds, which defend a breeding territory approximately five ha in size, while giving biparental care to their altricial offspring (Power and Lombardo 1996). Bluebirds are often parasitized by hematophagous nest ectoparasitic blowfly larvae, which can potentially carry diseases or otherwise affect nestling development (O’Brien and Dawson 2013). Bluebirds exhibit secondary cavity nesting (Power and Lombardo 1996), and on this site, they used nest boxes (Garcia et al. 1993). They were studied at…

Some socially monogamous species follow a system of cooperative breeding, in which helpers within a group help assist in taking care of offspring of other parents. This increases the chance of survival of the offspring, and provides them with care such as grooming, training, and guarding. Because of the way that offspring are raised within cooperative breeding species, the fitness of offspring is greater than offspring who are not given aid by helpers. I will be discussing research done on this phenomena and its effects on fitness in the red wolf (Canis rufus) (Sparkman et al., 2010), the white-fronted bee-eater (Merops bullockoides) (Emlen & Wrege, 1991), and the acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) (Koenig et al., 2007).…

The Life of the Galapagos Penguin The endangered animal I decided to do my research paper on was the Galapagos penguin. I picked this animal because Penguins are one of my favorite animals and it interested me that the Galapagos Penguin is the only penguin that lives in a warm climate. I learned many interesting facts about this penguin including the habitat where it lives, the food it eats, how many times a year that it reproduces, what is being done to save the penguin from extinction, what the penguin looks like, what we as humans do to hurt the penguin, and how many of the penguins are left. After learning all these things I realized that the Galapagos penguin is very different compared to other penguins.…

Each year, countless sea turtle eggs are illegally harvested in Central America and sold on the black market. Poachers dig up the nests, remove the eggs and sell them to middlemen, who in turn transport them to cities where they are sold as staples in bars and restaurants. Yet how they reach their destination remains something of a mystery to conservationists. Since little is known about the routes frequented by smugglers, thereby frustrating efforts to thwart the sale of poached sea turtle eggs to consumers.…

In the island of Beak-topia, resides a countless number of birds. To search for food, some fly above the trees, like the toucan, while others swim underneath the island, like the penguin. To hang out with their friends, some get up really early, like the rooster, and some wait until others go to bed, like the owl. All the birds on the island are different, but we still call them birds. There are four basic things that all of these types of birds have in common.…

BIRD SWARM ALGORITHM: BSA is a new meta-heuristic swarm intelligence algorithm proposed by Xian-Bing Meng [35] , inspired by social behavior and interaction of birds. Different birds gather food in different ways. Foraging is the searching for food resources or gathering food either for immediate consumption or future storage. Birds forage in flocks because they gather more information in flocks than their own intelligence.…

What is currently known is that the clutch sizes range from 1 to 3 eggs the breeding success is 9.3% out of 10 juveniles and there is a 6-month breeding season from courtship to the collection of nesting in material. Breeding is not completely synchronised between the colonies, and between 50-80% of the birds in each colony partake in breeding pairs breeding (Schuckard, R. 1994), with other individuals not attempting to breed (Nelson, A. 1971; Butler, D. 2003). The incubation length, nestling period, age at fledging, age at independence as well as typical age at first breeding are all unknown. Gene flow or dispersal between colonies have not be researched (Schuckard, R.…
