Jupiter And Thetis Analysis

One painting that really caught my eye is the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Getlein, 2016). This painting was inspired from Homer’s Iliad, “The Greek epic of the Trojan War (Getlein, 2016).” Without knowing what it really means you can tell more or less what is happening based off of the artists creativity. From first sight, you can see A man sitting in a throne which depicts royalty. There are two women looking at the man in an almost lustful perspective. There is also an eagle sitting close to the man which might represent the sheer power of the man. Not being able to see through the painting shows opaqueness and knowing this about the painting is very important to understand the meaning of it. The painting also has layers to it. The closest layer seems to be the clouds on the bottom so that is the first layer. Also, the clouds on the first layers are bright and obvious while the third layers clouds are dark and gloomy. The second layer or middle layer is Thetis and Jupiter with the eagle on the side and this is the most important layer. The second layer is the most important because the focus of the painting is based around these characters and object. The third layer is the dark clouds I mentioned and also Jupiter’s wife (the man) is on a dark cloud looking at him while Thetis is showing sexual gestures. I feel that the dark clouds are important in the perspective of the wife because it ties directly to the jealousy of the wife. There is use of a few colors, but every color in the painting are important. The throne block is a color of gold which helps show the richness of it. The colors of the clothes show colors of older clothes rather than the ones we have today. This is important to use in the painting because the era of it is not a present-day representation. The color of the skin in this painting is very bright and lifelike. It is more of a nude painting and it makes a difference because if the characters were clothed fully the importance of the skin couldn’t be shown to draw attention.
