Case Study: OTC Sleep Aids

1. The title of the study I used is OTC Sleep Aids. It was published in February 2015

2. Our group project is a drink that aids with sleeping. The way it works is that it helps people calm down right before bed. It achieves this by putting its users in a cognitive state where they are in a peaceful place. Some examples of these are a beach, waterfall or a forest. Each flavor of the drink puts the consumer in one of these psychological realities. The drink is non-addictive and natural.

3. The reason why I chose this report is because it revolved around our product concept. It provided information that is valuable to determine our marketing strategy. The report brought up three major issues our group must address. One of these is how to get

ZzzQuil is a sub-product of NyQuil, an OTC cold relief product. ZzzQuil is a sleep aid. It contains diphenhydramine which has the effect of causing its user to feel relaxed and sleepy. It comes in liquid and tablet forms.

3. Twelve tablets and six liquid ounces of the product cost between $5.49 and $6.99.

4. ZzzQuil can be found in many different stores. Some examples include pharmaceutical stores (Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens) the medical section of department stores (Kmart, Target, Walmart) and convenience stores (7-Eleven, Wawa, Speedway). It is a common product and is not hard to find.

5. The product is promoted through basic tactics: commercials, social media, and magazine advertisements. There is not much PR efforts to build awareness of the product except for blog reviews. The biggest benefit ZzzQuil is being a part of the NyQuil/Vicks brand, which is known by many Americans.

6. The strength of the brand is that many people struggle with sleep. Furthermore, there is a distinct target market of people who commonly have sleeping issues. As previously mentioned, the NyQuil brand associated with ZzzQuil which validates the legitimacy of the product. People know that NyQuil is an established brand, therefore, ZzzQuil must be a quality item. Lastly, they have a strong social media presence.
