I have learned several things throughout the course in Introduction to Multicultural Education and Diversity- things that will help me in the future, as well as to help me grow as a person. I learned how to communicate properly with individual differences, the history of African Americans, to overcome my own biases, to sympathize with guest speakers, and to make a difference in the community. Society is filled with individual differences of ethnicity, race, gender, SES, sexual orientation, religion, exceptionalities, language, and geographic area. I have learned how to communicate properly with all of these differences, so I can make a difference in the community and in education. In my future classroom, I will be able to incorporate these differences by creating an atmosphere that is comfortable to every student. For example, read multicultural books, celebrate multicultural themes, play music, group work, art/crafts, and etc. My favorite video/reflection was Nick Vujicic …show more content…
My favorite speaker was Dr. Craig because he taught me that everything is possible if you put your mind to it. He is an amazing person that has overcome many obstacles, in addition to being an inspiration to society. Dr. Craig stated “love people and students for who they are, what they can do, and they will succeed.” That statement sums up how all teachers should think and act when they walk into the classroom. Josefina Garcia Davila helped me to understand what it was like to move to a new country where she had no friends, did not speak English, and had to start a new school. According to Davila “Appreciate, value, celebrate, and embrace differences- do not try to change people, just embrace them!” This helps me as teachers because it shows me that I need to integrate every student’s background into my classroom and embrace it, instead of cover it

The source is written by many different authors and it is mainly edited by the 4 authors mentioned above. These authors are one of the best scholars that tackle the controversial ideas of diversity, and Canadian policies. It respectfully challenges the saint idea that multiculturalism is great for Canada, however it does not claim Multiculturalism is actually bad. It continually demonstrates the underlying capability, the conventional restraints and the miniscule disorders of the policies and blinding discourse of multiculturalism.…

The promotion of cultural diversity and individual difference can increase students’ self-concepts whilst developing respect and understanding for all people. By placing a value and acknowledging mutual respect for all individuals, avoidance of racial stereotyping begins, it also enables racist comments and misconceptions to be replaced with factual information (Craven, 2011). By providing educators with greater understandings based on fact and truth empowers…

Before taking this class, I didn’t know what to expect. A few friends recommended the class but gave little insight on what the class would be about. When I read the title and description of the class I believed that we would be a simple Black history class, but after taking this class, I learned that it was so much more. Before, I thought I had Blackness figured out seeing that I am a Black woman, but after taking Introduction to the Black Experience, I have learned that there is so much history and ideology I have yet to learn or hear about. More than anything, this class gave me the validation and confidence needed to express my opinions and embrace my Blackness.…

Throughout the state of Arizona there is an issue being debated around the state over multiculturalism in the classroom because of ethnic study classes that are in the schools. This heated argument began when a new Arizona law that was being made, that stated that they will ban ethnic studies from public an charter school. The reason behind the creation of this law is because certain individuals saw these classes as a "threat" to overthrow the government and "promote" ethnic solidarity over other students due the topics and books that were being used in the classrooms as materials. Which they used this law to get rid of Mexican-American studies alone over that reason without looking into the ethnic classes it self, for what it is. However, that not what others who are for these classes see it as, specially the teacher who are teaching theses classes to them.…

While listening to each multicultural presentation, I was able to learn about many different things and concepts, which I had never heard about before. Each group did a different lesson and informed the class about different subjects. Each group also gave great examples of different lessons we can use one day in the classroom to incorporate multicultural education into each students daily lives. The first presentation I really enjoyed and learned from was Paige, Jenna, and Lexi’s presentation. They did a presentation targeted to a 5th grade class.…

Client who has strong religious belief from you…what would be some of the most important elements to be considered during the initial assessment, and why. The client religious belief should take into consideration, but it should not affect my ability to provide any treatment to the client. As a rule, I should not allow client religion to be conflicted with mine since it’s them that I am solely healing. Perhaps it might sound somewhat condescending, but integrating religion does not mean I should impose my own values on clients.…

Critical Reflections 1. Reflection/Differentiation 1. When completing other practicum experiences at university I realised there is so much information to be absorbed from the classroom experience. I realised the importance of documenting throughout the practicum experience drawing special attention to key strategies or methods which may be beneficial to me in the future. Research suggests that reflective methods such as journaling, role modelling, use of questions, and critical incidents help individuals develop skills in reflection and enhance the learning process (Brookfield, 1990).…

Admittedly, multiculturalism is a separate topic from most schools curriculum which makes critics and teachers believe it is not needed nor is it a real thing. Stephanie Spina in a 1997 opinion paper “ What’s In a Name? An Argument Against ‘Multicultural’ Education,” addresses the common belief that multicultural education is only towards students from another race than the dominant group.…

As a soon-to-be graduate, I firmly believe that this course took a lot of my previous knowledge learned within this program and made my knowledge applicable to my current and future teaching positions. Different from all of the other courses I have taken within my program, this course exposed me to a variety of teaching experiences and situations which I am not exposed to in my current position in student affairs. From our class discussions, I was able to expand on different ways to assess student’s knowledge. Personally, I didn’t think I would be able to gain much from the assessment part of this course, since I don’t teach in a traditional classroom- but I was wrong.…

Upon taking this class, I was under the impression that I would have learnt the history of multi-culturalism; and how it exponentially grew to be a “trending topic” (particularly as it pertains to these United States of America) however, this was not the case. Although I didn 't learn about migration patterns specifically, the class reinforced my knowledge on globalization and the influence it has had on the spread of different cultures and races not only in the United States but internationally. Being from the UK, a small island where things are often imported; and land where people seek a new opportunity, I have had the privilege of interacting and knowing people from all seven continents; consequently, the impacts of globalism have been in my sub-conscious for a substantial amount of time. Having said that, upon taking this class, I have strengthen my knowledge of multiculturalism and its optimal circumstances, including advancements with the four dimensions of globalization- Economic, Political, Cultural, and Technological. Identify one or two concepts, readings, discussions, and/or experiences, which you found particularly helpful.…
