Experiencing computer science and mathematics at BC has inspired me and sparked a passion. I take so much pride in my study of Math and Computer Science because I can see the need and potential for computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in society; they are essential. One of my first realizations of this was through the Mcnair Exploratory Program. An undergraduate research program; Mcnair 's goal is to give underrepresented minorities a chance to experience research under the supervision of a faculty Mentor. My research of transcendental numbers in economics taught me how computers can play a huge role in most academic areas. My research was a way for me to tie computer science into a research topic based on math and social science; …show more content…
I volunteered as a tutor at Saint Mary 's bridge Home through the PULSE program this year. Working with a population of disenfranchised youth at Saint mary 's center taught me one key lesson that I would like to bring to the Student Technology Specialist position; Computer Science and Math is for everyone. My response was that I am here as a privileged individual at Boston College for others; particularly those less privileged. For six hours twice a week I would make my way to Dorchester and be with children who society has not given a fair chance; because of this they lacked the soft skills essential to achieving in school. Lending a hand up to these children fostered qualities of stewardship in me that were lying dormant; and developed a passion for teaching that will last a

Coming into UNC as a first-year student, I was lucky enough to have quite a few transfer credits from high school; many of which were in my intended field of study: mathematics. Looking to continue with a major in mathematics, I signed up for the next course in the intended major progression, MATH 381: Discrete Mathematics. This course serves as an introduction to mathematical logic, almost like a stepping stone towards higher mathematics. On my first day of my first year at Carolina, I walked into the classroom in Phillips to realize that I was the only first year in the course. The rest of them were sophomores or juniors, who were all quite familiar with the inner machinations of Carolina’s mathematics department.…

In all of my time as a District 54 student, I was never more impacted by one individual than by Mrs. Michelle Burke. In eighth grade I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to enroll in the nearly brand new PLTW STEM class at Jane Addams Junior High. The class was spectacular for me, as I was formally studying a subject I had always wanted to learn more about. I was spellbound by the fact I was able to design an object on the computer, such as a holiday ornament or a toy car, and hold it in my hands after it had been 3D printed. I have always been enamored by the power to create, and the class let me take it one step further.…
